Alya Mooro on Life as a Middle Eastern Woman Outside the Stereotypes

  • Resumen

  • On this week's episode we're pleased to welcome journalist and author Alya Mooro.

Alya has written for titles including The Telegraph, The Washington Post, Grazia and Refinery29, but it's her incredible book, The Greatest Freedom, that we're most excited to talk to her about.

The book explores ‘life as a middle eastern woman outside the stereotypes’ and is a fascinating exploration of culture, identity and the pressures of expectation. As an Egyptian growing up in London, Alya talks of feeling like a ‘hybrid - British and Egyptian both and consequentially neither’.

Along with her own experiences, when writing The Greater Freedom, Alya also gathered anecdotes from other women, aged 24-50. She’s here to talk to us about what she learned from telling her story, the importance of ‘passing the mic’ and sharing her platform with other voices, and the pressures of what she describes as ‘the invisible jury.’
