He is particularly notable as the inventor of dynamite and other high explosives, and held more than 350 patents in his lifetime. When Alfred Nobel wrote his will in 1895, it established that prizes would be awarded each year to commemorate and honor those who made significant achievements in the areas of science, medicine, literature and peace. While no official reason has been given for why he created these awards most experts agree the main reason was one of his brothers died in a tragic explosion while working on stabilizing nitroglygerin. Nobel Prize medals for Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, and Literature are minted in Stockholm, while the Peace Prize medal is minted in Oslo.

It all started when Sir Henry Cole, a member of the British civil service, created the modern concept of the Christmas card along with his artist friend, John Horsley, in 1843, as a means to encourage more people to use the new British postal system. Their first card was sold for one shilling or about 24 U.S. cents. By the 1860s, the practice of sending Christmas cards was more or less in full swing in Britain thanks to the rise and advent of the printing press. No matter how often you actually talk to your distant relatives, chances are you'll get a Christmas card from them! Christmas cards are a great way to catch up on the year's highlights if you haven't had time to get in on all the details throughout the year.

One of the greatest things about cookies: they come in hundreds of shapes and sizes and flavors and are relatively simple to make. In the 17th century, Dutch settlers introduced "koekjes" to America.
