  • Reminisce. Live with Marc Bamuthi Joseph. Home for the Holidays with the Huxtables. Redefining Cool Through the Arts. Defining a Culture Through a Meal.
    Aug 5 2022
2001 produced one of the greatest collabs ever put down on a track when Common and Mos Def joined Bilal to produce Reminisce. The song is a journey through a life. An exploration of what was, what is, and what could be.  “Just when I think that I forgot you I hear that dub that we used to rock to Just when I think I'm gettin' on without you Somebody passed and asked me about you.” This episode will take you on the same kind of journey. The B Dorm squad is going home and getting away from campus for summer break. And on that trip back home we have a very special guest — a guide in many ways, a pioneer, a mentor, a brother and a friend. Marc Bamuthi Joseph (@bamuthi ) is a poet, dancer, playwright, actor, musician, and composer and currently serves as the Vice President and Artistic Director of Social Impact at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. He is a 2017 TED Global Fellow, an inaugural recipient of the Guggenheim Social Practice initiative, and an honoree of the United States Artists Rockefeller Fellowship. Joseph’s opera libretto, We Shall Not Be Moved, was named one of 2017’s “Best Classical Music Performances” by The New York Times. He’s a badass. He gets things done. And he always has.  The conversation is a warm, thoughtful look at what it takes to make it in America. What it means to succeed as a black man in America. And how to work to subvert the arts and steer the message for a brighter future for all of us. That’s what B Dorm is all about. • Good Times. Black on Black w/JT - Blunts vs Glass. Pick Your Poison - Whose Headline Is It? Dirty Words - Triggered by Triggered. Debate Club: And Now ... Underpants.
    Jun 24 2022
In 2002, Styles P joined forces with Swizz Beats and Saint Denson to drop a bomb upon the ears of the world; Good Times (I Get High) was an instant hit, and for a few summers it was the unofficial national anthem for weed heads. The beats, the lyrics – the whole vibe hits hard. Looking back at it, maybe it hit a little too hard? But that’s what happens. The times change. We all get a little older and hopefully a little wiser. A little better. A little more positive. Now Styles P has a juice bar with Jadakiss in the Bronx. And it’s dope. We are always going to support positive change. And that means that the B Dorm pod isn’t afraid of change. We’re breaking out a couple of new segments. First up is Black on Black with Jehriko. The segment is focused on, as Don eloquently puts it, “Helping your pockets. And helping your habits.” JT breaks down how you can save money and smoke healthier by putting down the blunt and picking up a pipe. That glass has a stigma that goes with it, but should it? It’s a deeper dive into a subject that on the surface seems funny, but there is more to it than that. Your hosts Don Elivert and Jehriko Turner are the perfect guides to help you explore the stories of the day. They break down how the news cycle has broken down, Twitter’s role and how money and greed are helping to destroy people’s ability to find legit info. It’s a serious topic, but they present it in a fun and informative delivery that’s going to make you laugh, make you think and make you feel. That’s what B Dorm is all about. A smart, fun, educated conversation that doesn’t take itself too seriously. This is the B Dorm podcast. Pour yourself something. #drinksexy.  Every episode of The B Dorm Podcast is an entertaining and thought provoking experience that will make you laugh, and make you feel. • C.R.E.A.M. Reality vs Reality: When Outrage Overreaches. Why Attack Black? Corporatized Juneteenth Under Fire. Don’s Dystopian Pick: Potato Sole Survivor.
    Jun 10 2022
When the Wu-Tang clan dropped Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) in 1993, the album was an instant classic. A genre-redefining piece of history. And maybe no track on the album is more iconic than C.R.E.A.M. Cash Rules Everything Around Me.  In a capitalist society, money is as important as air or water to survive. Everything runs on money, so when you start seeing corporate America using black and brown faces to sell shit, just know that there is a reason. Dollar, dollar bills y’all.  But is that reason automatically bad? And even if it isn’t perfect, can’t there still be good outcomes and results? Can’t we celebrate … anything? Have we become so programmed to be angry that we can no longer even recognize positive change? If we can’t agree on a definition of REALITY, does it even matter? Your hosts Don Elivert and Jehriko Turner are asking tough questions. Deep questions. And they sprinkle in some fun, because part of the challenge we all face is recognizing the wins we get and taking a minute to reflect on the accomplishments – to celebrate the progress. Our society must continue to reckon with its past, but allowing ourselves to be triggered without pausing to examine our reactive tendencies will get us nowhere fast. So press play and get some perspective. • Eye For an Eye. Breaking Down Buffalo. Irrational Fear. If You See Something, Say Something. And Then An Alien Came Thru.
    May 27 2022
In 1995, Queensbridge's finest — Nas and Mobb Deep — collabed with Raekwon to drop Eye for an Eye. The song is an exploration of a violent world, an oppressive place where people are forced to do what they can to survive: “I might crack a smile but ain't a damn thing funny, I'm caught up in the dirt where your hands get muddy.” Sadly, more than 25 years later, the lyrics still hold true. But now, in places like Buffalo, the threat isn’t coming from the next block over. The threat is coming from the outside. The threat is driving hundreds of miles to target a community because of their race. The threat is real. The threat is growing. The threat is imminent. Your hosts Don Elivert and Jehriko Turner dig in deep. They explore the pain and reflect on how the only response most people can muster at this point is just to laugh at the irony. Gallows humor. But don’t get it twisted. None of it is funny. Jokes mask the truth and sometimes — most times — that truth is fucking awful. But the answer isn’t to look away. The answer is to confront it. To name it. To call it out and to hold people accountable. It’s the most important thing we can do as individuals and it’s the most important thing our allies can do, especially when we’re not around. Especially when no one is looking. Change begins at home. And we need some damn change. Mass shootings are pure evil, but every single one of those people had people in their lives that never stepped up, never stepped in. Are you doing your part to help? Are you doing your part to stop the hatred? To stop it from spreading? We can all do better. We all have to do better.  And later in the pod, in true B Dorm fashion, they take the conversation where you don’t expect. Space. Who comes with and who gets left back? It’s a fun one and you will never guess who Don is taking with him and why. And who he isn’t. • Health, Wealth, Self. Celebrate Women by Defending Them. Smacking Down Hypocrisy with Science. Pick 3: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse.
    May 13 2022
In 1995 KRS-ONE dropped Health, Wealth, Self on his self-titled solo album. Take a minute, listen and reflect. It’s the perfect track for this episode and a great anthem for the times. Who brought you into the world? Do you fight to protect them? Do you realize how they're being attacked right now, how their rights are being stripped from them? This would be the first time a constitutional right has been granted and then taken away. Are you fighting for them? Are you doing enough? The people that are taking away their rights are counting on people to lose focus, to be overwhelmed. They want us to feel powerless. Don’t. America is a country built on contradictions. The land of the free, built by slaves upon the land of a dead or displaced indigenous population. The land of opportunity, but often at the expense of someone else’s suffering. Contradiction breeds hypocrisy. So in a place where pro-gun and pro-life can walk hand-in-hand, it seems logical that even the concept of science could come into question, that facts can lose their validity. In this episode, we look at SCIENCE as a dirty word; oh, and tune in to find out what else made the Hypocrisy Checklist. It’s deep and gets to some of the fundamental issues that have been plaguing our country in very obvious ways over the last couple of years. But these are issues that have been a rot at the core of our nation since its foundation. Your hosts Don Elivert and Jehriko Turner dig into these contradictions with typical B Dorm levity. And, in light of the recent leaks of the Supreme Court’s pending decision on Roe v Wade, they remind us that civil rights are everyone's responsibility, not just the 50 percent of us with the capacity to carry a fetus. This 50-year precedent is set to be overturned by an activist court. And it will have impacts beyond abortion. The hypocrisy and contradictions don’t stop there. We’ve all been a part of the bizarre hypocrisies of the pandemic. The politicians railing against the vaccine for political points, while being fully vaxxed and boosted themselves. And on the other side, the ones telling us to stay home and then getting caught at beach resorts or at fine dining restaurants unmasked. And how did we all end up getting held hostage by a bunch of dudes we all know cheated their way through science class anyway? That’s the beauty of the B Dorm podcast, and of every show produced by Righteous Media. We’ll call bullshit on all of it. Left. Right. Center. Put in the work or get called out.  This is what it’s all about. A smart, fun, educated conversation that doesn’t take itself too seriously. This is the B Dorm podcast. Pour yourself something. #drinksexy.  Every episode of The B Dorm Podcast is an entertaining and thought provoking experience that will make you laugh, and make you feel. • (Just Like) Music. Progress, Change and Resisting New Shit. Old School vs New School - Why Pick One? Don’s Dystopian Decision: Pick Three Albums.
    Apr 29 2022
This episode asks what seems to be a simple question, “What does it mean to be progressive?” And while the answer for many people seems to be simple, when the perspective is changed, things get more complicated very quickly. It’s the kind of question that B Dorm was built for. And an important part of the foundation that B Dorm is built on, is a love of hip hop and R&B. So in 2001 when Erick Sermon dropped (Just Like) Music it was the perfect blend, mixing the silky smooth sound of Marvin Gaye with the modern, raw sound of hip hop. It’s a timeless jam and just one of many from what a lot of people consider the best time ever for hip hop. And as much as we love the old school jams, your hosts Don Elivert and Jehriko Turner ask the important question, has our love of hip hop continued to evolve too? Are too many people stuck on old jams and dismissing the new artists the same way the old heads dissed hip hop when we were coming up? It’s an easy argument to fall into. The 1990s and early 2000s gave us BIGGIE, Nas, Wu Tang, Tupac and Dre. Jay Z, DMX and Snoop. But the current crop is every bit as talented with J Cole, Chance, Future and Lil Nas X pushing the art forward. So why don’t they get the love? Why do so many people seem to think that hip hop hasn’t evolved and gotten better? Has it? Has it progressed?  And speaking of progress, we’ve all got to do better when it comes to recycling and taking care of the environment. We just had Earth Day, but that’s not enough. And unless you’re Bezos or Elon, you’re stuck here on Earth with the rest of us, so clean up after yourself. If you can make every day 4/20, you can make every day Earth Day.  It’s a fun conversation and it's an important and interesting theme. What does it mean to be progressive? Does anyone ever think that they are regressive? Doesn’t everyone think they are progressive in some ways? This is what it’s all about. A smart, fun, educated conversation that doesn’t take itself too seriously. This is the B Dorm podcast. Pour yourself something. #drinksexy.  Every episode of The B Dorm Podcast is an entertaining and thought provoking experience that will make you laugh, and make you feel.
