The events of the last month in Israel and Gaza; the events of the past year in Easterns Ukraine; the events of the world that are too often on cruel display are enough to leave us in despair as to whether we can ever rise to express the better angels of our nature. I review relevant research about the biases we bring to situations where are basic need for safety, security, and stability is seemingly threatened. I discuss how such threats hijack our attention system and drive us to act in the world not to what is actually there but to what we anticipate or predict is there (a skewed perspective) with often tragic results. This holds true as much for individuals as nation states. Tune in and learn how to harness aspects of our inborn nature to elevate ourselves and those around us to better reflect the better angels of our humanity.
