Lesson Summary:

This week, Alma’s life is coming to an end, and a great war with the Lamanites is just beginning. To prepare his sons, Alma will invite each to hear his counsel individually. First, he’ll talk to his oldest son, Helaman. He’ll teach him about the importance of his personal deliverance story in a beautiful, deliberate chiasmus. Next, he’ll give him instructions on deepening his own testimony by keeping the plates and preserving the stories of the past. His counsel to his second son, Shiblon, will focus on the joy that comes to our lives when we are diligent, steady, and sure. The messages are unique, but both focus our eyes firmly on the power and promise of Jesus Christ.

Questions to Consider:

Alma 37:12 | How can something be straight and also round? Are there symbols in scripture or the temple that help you understand what this phrase might mean?

Alma 37:38-46 | What do you think the Liahona represents? The Holy Ghost, patriarchal blessings, something else? Have you had experiences when you “tarried” in the wilderness? How did you get out of them?

Alma 38:15 & 37:47 | What do you think it means to be sober regarding the gospel of Jesus Christ? How did Christ demonstrate this attribute for us?
