This is the end of the line for our discussion podcast for Persona 4 Golden. Seems like the game hasn’t aged as gracefully as everyone wanted and that’s OK. If you, too, are not as into the gameplay but am interested in the story, we recommend watching the anime.

If you like the gameplay, but wish Persona 4 had more quality of life improvements, then you should absolutely play Persona 5. After this experience, I think its obvious to state that Persona 5 should be someone’s first experience with the Persona franchise.

We may reconvene once more if people watch the anime or try Persona 5 to discuss the franchise as a whole, but we do hope you enjoyed your time with us and this Persona 4 adventure.

  • Persona 4 Golden - Part 3 - June 27
    Mar 9 2023

Assignment: Get to June 27th and attempt the third dungeon at least once.

Listen to this episode on the podcast service of your choice by clicking here.

Kanji has been rescued and boy, the group is disappointed with the revelation (or lack of revelation) of Kanji’s sexuality. The game is starting to show its age with its social commentary, at least looking at it from a 2023 perspective. Kanji’s story is ultimately one about society’s expectations of masculinity and how he was bullied for not fitting that mold.

Acknowledging his shadow is just the first part of his journey of personal growth in this game. In order to develop a social link with him, you’ll need to talk to a woman on the 2nd floor of the Learning Building who states Kanji has been bullying people. You’ll then find Kanji on the 1st floor of the Practice Building, longingly looking into the crafts room and you can confront him about these rumors. From here, you’ll be able to spend time with him to help him resolve his internal conflicts.

The next victim we have to save is Rise Kujikawa, a famous idol that is from Iniba. She’s been overly-sexualized due to her pervious life in the public spotlight and that manifests when she’s thrown into the TV in probably the most uncomfortable part of the game.

The group also discusses the incredibly problematic camping trip. Yikes. Ronin leads and Cookie, Melkor, and Shrimpy join the discussion

  • Persona 4 Golden - Part 2: May 21
    Feb 23 2023

Assignment: Get to May 21st and attempt the second dungeon at least once.

After Completing the first dungeon and recruiting Yukiko into the investigation team, you now set out to save the next potential murder victim, Kanji Tatsumi.

So far the group isn’t exploring the life simulator aspect of this game all that much. Iniba is a small town, but there’s always multiple options for things to do each day. Here’s some quick tips for how you can spend your time:

You can earn money and raise your skills by getting a job. Check the bulletin board near the Aiya restaurant for available jobs.

-Join clubs and hang out with with your friends. Spending time with your pals will allow you to fuse stronger personas

-Fuse your personas! This will allow you to pass on strong attacks to Personas with high stats.

-Give Marie your skill cards. Skill cards are one time use. Giving them to Marie will allow you to purchase multiple later.

-Make sure you buy vegetable seeds. Tomatoes can restore SP!

-The group so far in unimpressed with this JRPG favorite. The life simulator aspect hasn’t grabbed them and no one is super enthused to invest time in activities outside dungeon crawling. At least they like the story.

  • Persona 4 Golden - Part 1: April 20
    Feb 9 2023

Assignment: Get to April 20th and attempt the first dungeon at least once with 3 party members.

Persona 4 Golden is the first JRPG we've played since Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition and we've actually been working towards the Persona series in secret since we've finished DQ11.

This is part High School Life Simulator, part Japanese Role Playing Game and it's heavily influenced by the philosophy of Carl Jung. It even has a rogue-like element with its randomly generated dungeons.

This is a long game. Fingers crossed to see if everyone will complete the game (Shrimpy probably will not).

  • Tokimeki Memorial
    Jan 26 2023

Assignment: Try the English Patch create

Tokimeki Memorial is a High School life simulator originally released in 1994 in Japan. You're avatar is a High School freshman and in this game you'll go to school, take exams, join clubs, and, if you play your cards right, maybe your crush will confess her love to you under the Tree of Legend after graduation.

The dating element is core feature of this game. While there has been dating simulators before Tokimeki Memorial, Tokimeki Memorial separates itself by, well, not being pornographic. If you ever wanted to play a video game written by John Hughes, Tokimeki Memorial might be the closest thing you'll find.

It also separates itself from it's lewd counterparts by having one of the most sophisticated systems to develop relationships with NPCs found in any game, including modern releases. You could get a group of friends together to talk about their experience with Tokimeki Memorial and each person would have a wildly different experience than each other person.

This is is exactly what happened in our discussion.

Tokimeki Memorial was a full-budget, mass-marketed, AAA release by gaming giant Konami (The publisher that brought us games like Contra, Castlevania, and Metal Gear Solid), and was so successful it became one of Konami's most beloved properties in Japan, spawning numerous sequels, spin-offs, cartoons, comic books, audio dramas, and even a movie.

However, despite it being wildly popular in Japan, it (nor any of its sequels) never had an official release outside of Japan. It wouldn't be until March of 2022 that the game would get its first English fan-translation.

If you, too, would like to play Tokimeki Memorial, you'll need the following

    1. A Super Nintendo Emulator
    2. A copy of the Tokimeki Memorial Rom (I believe it is, at the very least, frowned upon to link to specific roms).
    3. The fan-made English Translation Patch
    4. Follow these instructions on sneslab.net

We also highly encourage you to watch the Action Button Review of Tokimeki Memorial which is where we first learned about this game.

Cookie leads the discussion and is joined by Melkor, Shirmpy, & Reeplay

  • Hades - Week 1 - Unlock your 2nd Weapon
    Jan 19 2023

    Assignment: Unlock your 2nd Weapon

On the heels of playing Rogue Legacy, we jump into Hades to continue with our Rogue-Like/Rogue-Lite education. If Rogue Legacy represents the genesis of the Rogue-Lite genre, Hades is the current apex of the genre.

It blends the rogue-lite gameplay with its story in a way that's just satisfying and clever.

This episode is our first impressions of Hades, we'll have 2 future episodes discussing this game more in the near future.

  • Rogue Legacy - Week 2 - Defeat Khidr
    Jan 12 2023

Assignment: Defeat Khidr, the first boss of Rogue Legacy

We continue talking about 2013's Rogue Legacy. The goal was to play enough to defeat the first boss, Khidr (Pronounced as Alan). The purpose here was to have everyone experience the game loop enough to understand the Rogue-lite genre. This is a game we didn't feel it was important to complete, just experience the progenitor of the Rogue-lite genre.

Who ended enjoying their time with Rogue Legacy? Listen and you'll find out, but its probably exactly who you think it is.
