  • Episode 102: Joshua Hood, Author of Burn Out
    Aug 12 2024

This week we welcome Joshua Hood, author of Burn Out...Available everywhere August 13th!

Joshua Hood is the author of The Guardian (Blackstone Publishing, 2023), Treadstone Rendition, Treadstone Transgression, The Treadstone Exile, The Treadstone Resurrection, Warning Order, Clear by Fire, and most recently Burn Out. Josh decided to follow his brother into the military and joined the army after graduating with an English degree from the University of Memphis. He spent five years in the 82nd Airborne Division, becoming a team leader in the 3-504 Parachute Infantry Regiment in Iraq from 2005-2006 where he conducted combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. From 2007-2008, Hood served as a squad leader with the 1-508th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Afghanistan where he put more Foot-to-Taliban-Ass and was decorated for valor in Operation Furious Pursuit. On his return to civilian life, he was a sniper team leader on a full-time SWAT team in Memphis, TN, where he was awarded the lifesaving medal for saving the life of a civilian with quick, creative, and resourceful instincts.

Burn Out is the story of former convict Jake Slade turned US Forest Service Smokejumper—highly-trained, experienced firefighters who provide leadership for quick wildland fires in remote areas. While he's ready for any of nature’s toughest battles while parachuting into raging fires, he wasn’t prepared for any manmade battles—especially one including his old friend, confidential informant agent Mikey Boone. Boone, who was almost killed by a cartel he plans to testify against, calls Slade for help while on the run. Unable to refuse an offer that promises his prison time to be expunged from his record, Slade complies, hoping to end the demons of his past. But what begins as a straightforward search and rescue mission swiftly becomes a harrowing run for his own life.

We discuss the writing process from start to finish, what it takes to get your manuscript in front of a publisher, and how structuring fiction is important to telling a realistic story. Joshua talks about his experience as a veteran author, and we even geek-out with some Star Wars talk! So if your not afraid to hold your mind to the fire...this is the episode for you.

  • Episode 101: Dave Matheny, CEO of Silencer Shop
    Jul 29 2024

This week we welcome Dave Matheny, CEO of Silencer Shop. Silencer Shop is the largest silencer distributor in the U.S. Dave used his background as software engineer to streamline the silencer purchasing process, navigating the regulatory hurdles with a technology based approach. Dave discusses how his son being born with impaired hearing got him interested in silencers. He wanted to pass along his love for hunting and firearms to his son, but needed to protect his remaining hearing. Dave quickly learned that there had to be a better way to purchase a silencer, and Silencer Shop was born.

With over 2.5 million veterans suffering from tinnitus, and countless more dealing with hearing loss, silencers may be the answer for protecting our hearing, while still enjoying hunting and target shooting. Ninety-five percent of hunters and thirty-eight percent of target shooters do not wear hearing protection while shooting, often worsening the effects of hearing loss. Silencers provide that protection while allowing users to observe and enjoy their surroundings.

We discuss the silencer purchasing process, tax stamps, and ATF regulations. We also talk about how some of the recent Supreme Court decisions will impact silencer and firearms purchasing. Dave provides a simple roadmap to purchasing a silencer, while dispelling some of the myths surrounding what a silencer does and does not do. So turn off John Wick 4 (or at least pause it for an hour) and enjoy this weeks episode.

This week we welcome Jason Herrick, author of the Life Long Learners series. Jason's first book My Jesus Song is a bedtime lullaby that will remind your child of Jesus's love throughout all the stages of their life. My Jesus Song started as a private story Jason created for his boys, but soon blossomed in to a fully illustrated launching point for his Life Long Learner Series. Drawing from his faith, Jason creates a soothing and welcoming addition to the end of day routine. We discuss the challenges of self publishing a children's book, finding an illustrator, and taking on the task of getting your work out to the world.

We also take a deep dive into education, one of Jason's many passions. We discuss the Socratic method, and how current schooling procedures may fall short of what children really need. Jason talks about his desire to start his own school, but also spread his philosophy on education. This philosophy can be applied at home, whether your son or daughter attends public, private, or home school. • Episode 97: Charles Brown, President of Paralyzed Veterans of America
    Jun 15 2023

This week we welcome Charles Brown, two-term President of Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA). From a very young age, Brown knew he wanted to serve his nation and had a calling to work with military aircraft. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1985 and was trained in aviation ordinance. In 1986, Brown sustained a spinal cord injury as a result of a diving accident while serving in Cherry Point, NC. During his initial rehabilitation at the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Spinal Cord Injury center in Augusta, GA, he was introduced to PVA and became a member of the Southeastern Chapter. PVA is a congressionally chartered veterans service organization founded in 1946. They have developed a unique expertise on a wide variety of issues involving the special needs of their members – veterans of the armed forces who have experienced spinal cord injuries and dysfunction. “PVA helped me through the process of filing for benefits,” Brown says. “They gave me ideas for accessible bathrooms and entrances to my house. They have offered me sporting opportunities I never would have thought about.” In 1987, he moved back to his native Missouri. Wanting to give back to the organization who had given so much to him, Brown served on the Gateway Chapter board in a multitude of capacities, including as Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator, advocacy director, treasurer, and vice president. While in St. Louis, Brown helped establish the Rolling Rams quad rugby team. He recalls recruiting players by making phone calls to rehab facilities, and even talking to people in wheelchairs at the mall. The team really took off when a couple of recreational therapists got involved and brought athletes with them. Brown believes in helping his fellow Veterans improve their quality of life and is passionate about continuing to help PVA improve the accessibility of our nation. Currently on the USA Boccia team, Brown was selected team captain for the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Ranked 63rd in the world after one international tournament, he fully believes that an active life has kept him healthy. Get ready to be inspired with this week's interview!
