Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: Reinhardt’s Price School of Education Expands Program Offerings This fall, Reinhardt University’s Price School of Education is launching two new programs: a Post-Baccalaureate Teaching Certification in Pedagogy-Only and a Master’s in the Art of Teaching (MAT) Pedagogy degree. The Post-Baccalaureate program is for those with non-education degrees, allowing them to earn a teaching certification online while working. The MAT Pedagogy degree is aimed at certified teachers with unrelated degrees, providing additional credentials and potential salary increases. Both programs are online and address regional and statewide needs for qualified educators. Tami Smith, director of teacher education, highlights the importance of these programs in helping individuals pursue teaching careers and enhance their professional development. STORY 2: Sequoyah’s Tousignaut Headed to KSU Sequoyah basketball star Brendan Tousignaut committed to Kennesaw State on July 22, following in the footsteps of former Etowah guard Chase Clemmons, who joined the Owls last year. The incident occurred around 8:07 a.m., and all northbound lanes were closed for about an hour starting at 8:15 a.m. due to the accident. Stumptown, established in the 1920s, is one of Cherokee County’s oldest predominantly Black communities, named for the tree stumps left under house foundations during its development. The marker aims to highlight the community’s historical significance, with plans for more markers in partnership with the city to recognize other historic neighborhoods. The increase is intended to fund additional firefighter positions and meet rising costs due to inflation. Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: Artists Sought to Pint Murals in Woodstock’s New Parking Deck Visit Woodstock GA is seeking artists or artist teams to create murals for the new downtown parking deck as part of the Woodstock City Center project. The six-level deck will feature four murals at designated elevator bay locations (A3, A5, B1, and B2). Each mural will incorporate a base color provided by the organization into its design. Murals at A3 and A5 have a $6,000 budget each, while those at B1 and B2 have a $7,000 budget each. Interested artists must submit proposals by July 19 to be considered. Finalists will develop concepts by August 30, with installation planned for November to December. STORY 2: Woodstock Photographer Elected to Professional Photographers of America Council Armetrice Cabine, a professional photographer from Woodstock, has been elected to serve on the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) Council for the 2024 – 2027 term. PPA is a global nonprofit association with over 35,000 members, where council representatives like Cabine advocate for photographers' interests and participate in governance decisions. Cabine expressed her commitment to representing Georgia photographers, promoting their skills, and encouraging them to achieve Certified Professional Photographer status. STORY 3: Construction of Holly Springs City Hall to Start in Spring 2025 The city of Holly Springs is progressing towards constructing its new city hall, with construction slated to commence in spring 2025. Recently, the Holly Springs City Council unanimously approved an agreement with Molnar Jordan and Associates, Inc. for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design services for the new city hall. This agreement will update the MEP design to align with architectural plans, allowing the city to issue bids by late fall. The total projected cost for the new city hall is $12 million, funded through Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax revenues. The bidding process is expected to conclude by December, with construction anticipated to begin following a notice to proceed in spring 2025. Addie English received the Brandon English Memorial Scholarship to study exercise science at Samford University. Garrett Smith received the Jamie Horton Memorial Scholarship to pursue sports management and coaching at Tusculum University. The scholarships aim to support careers in physical education, health, wellness, coaching, or special education. Building Fires also initiated the Athletic Excellence Honor Cord program at Cherokee High School, recognizing 82 seniors who earned varsity letters and maintained a 3.0 GPA. STORY 2: Woodstock’s Hub Transformation Named Project of Excellence The City of Woodstock's Hub Transformation Project received the 2024 Project of Excellence award from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Led by Jamie Palmer, Janis Steinbrenner, Brantley Day, and Matt McDow from Arcadis, the project aimed to enhance traffic flow in downtown Woodstock. Key improvements included converting Mill Street to a two-way street, creating a roundabout at Mill Street and Towne Lake Parkway, and adding a left turn lane at Towne Lake Parkway eastbound onto Main Street northbound. These changes alleviate congestion at the Main Street intersection, reducing both delays and accidents. Funding came from a loan and grant by the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank via the State Road and Tollway Authority. STORY 3: Cherokee Animal Shelter Offering Free Pet Adoptions The Cherokee County Animal Shelter is hosting free adoptions on July 2 and 3, aiming to find homes for nearly 200 cats and dogs currently in its care. Director Susan Garcia highlighted that this time of year sees a surge in kitten admissions, with many needing new homes after being fully vetted and weaned. Adoption fees, typically $100, are waived during the event and include vaccinations, spaying/neutering, microchipping, and more. The proposed maintenance and operations millage rate is 5.224 mills, up from 4.954 mills, aiming to increase property tax revenues by 7.45% over the rollback rate. Additional millage rates for fire services and parks bonds are also under review. Public hearings are scheduled for July 2, July 16 (at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.), with final decisions expected on July 16. The meetings will take place at the Cherokee County Administration Building in Canton. Agenda items include rezoning requests and development agreements. STORY 5: Waleska Man to Serve Five Years in Prison For Terroristic Threats Christopher Dean Bowling, a Waleska man, has been sentenced to five years in prison for terroristic threats following a conviction by the Cherokee County District Attorney's Office. The sentencing, handed down by Superior Court Judge Shannon Wallace on June 21, represents the maximum penalty under Georgia law for this offense. Bowling was initially investigated by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office after a domestic violence incident on July 28, 2023, where he prevented his partner from leaving and was accused of strangling her in the presence of a child. Despite being found guilty of terroristic threats, Bowling was acquitted of other related charges following a two-day trial.
