  • D. E. I. is NOT a Job… it’s an Assignment! The Fallout behind the Resignation
    Jan 17 2024

With all that has played out in the media relating to Dr. Claudine Gay, we have to recognize that there is ALWAYS more to the story...

In case you missed the headlines, "Claudine Gay is an American political scientist and academic administrator who was the 30th president of Harvard University and is the Wilbur A. Cowett Professor of Government and of African and African-American Studies at Harvard." (source -Wikipedia) whose resignation from the role as President at Harvard played out before our eyes I had to place a call to try and gather the reality of how this could happen.

The call was placed to Poor Culture Founder and Holy Queer Author, Rev. Karmen Michael Smith as I was perplexed by the portrayal of the story, I had to phone a friend! Going beyond the general scope of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Karmen helps me to understand the reality that what we see is a larger effort against diversity in traditional spaces. Babeeeeeeeeee... He! Goes! There!

  • HeWhoIzMe talks FX's "Kindred"
    Dec 24 2022

The scripted adaptation of #Kindred has been released and social media has been buzzing. Tap-In to this Special Edition of @DKPresents as HeWhoIzMe (@414_Boi) takes over and gives his review on the Octavia E. Butler classic. Not just a series of unrelated time travels, according to @414_Boi, there’s more to the story… but is it safe???

    The Show:

Adapted from the celebrated novel Kindred, by Hugo Award-winner Octavia E. Butler, the FX series centers on “Dana James” (Mallori Johnson), a young Black woman and aspiring writer who has uprooted her life of familial obligation and relocated to Los Angeles, ready to claim a future that, for once, feels all her own. But, before she can settle into her new home, she finds herself being violently pulled back and forth in time. She emerges at a nineteenth-century plantation, a place remarkably and intimately linked with Dana and her family. An interracial romance threads through Dana’s past and present, and the clock is ticking as she struggles to confront secrets she never knew ran through her blood, in this genre-breaking exploration of the ties that bind.

Kindred stars Mallori Johnson as “Dana James,” Micah Stock as “Kevin Franklin,” Ryan Kwanten as “Thomas Weylin,” Gayle Rankin as “Margaret Weylin,” Austin Smith as “Luke,” David Alexander Kaplan as “Rufus Weylin,” Sophina Brown as “Sarah” and Sheria Irving as “Olivia.”

Kindred, Octavia E. Butler’s celebrated and critically acclaimed novel, has been adapted for television by writer and showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins who executive produces the series with Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields, Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel of Protozoa Pictures, Courtney Lee-Mitchell and Jules Jackson. Janicza Bravo directed and served as an executive producer on the pilot. The eight-episode season is produced by FX Productions.

    The Book:

From the New York Times bestselling author of Parable of the Sower and MacArthur “Genius” Grant, Nebula, and Hugo award winner

The visionary time-travel classic whose Black female hero is pulled through time to face the horrors of American slavery and explores the impacts of racism, sexism, and white supremacy then and now.

Dana’s torment begins when she suddenly vanishes on her 26th birthday from California, 1976, and is dragged through time to antebellum Maryland to rescue a boy named Rufus, heir to a slaveowner’s plantation. She soon realizes the purpose of her summons to the past: protect Rufus to ensure his assault of her Black ancestor so that she may one day be born. As she endures the traumas of slavery and the soul-crushing normalization of savagery, Dana fights to keep her autonomy and return to the present. (Purchase the Book: Kindred) source: Amazon

  • “What Happens In My House…”
    Dec 21 2022

One of the most common phrases said in a black home for my generation was “What Happens in My House, Stays in My House!” It is a tactic that was used to ensure the family secrets stayed within the confines of the home. Furthermore, it’s one of the phases that also kept us from being able to HEAL!

With the recent outpour of family tension between #RomeoMIller and #MasterP playing out in front of the world on social media, I thought there’s no better time than NOW to start the conversation of Breaking the Generational Course and starting the path to Healing on Purpose. Understanding the need for such a conversation, I tapped into Toya T. as she is one who not only understands the saying but has realized the weight it carried as she raised her children; along with the approach she is taking to ensure it doesn’t impact her grandchildren. Also, going a step further, I called Yleis Engerman, MS, LADCI, LMHC, and Private Practice Owner of My Self Oath Inc. (www.myselfoath.org) to share her opinion on the recent display and discuss the topic of healing.

This is an episode that you may want to listen to alone as it will cause you to laugh, cry, think, analyze, and most of all, hopefully, it will put you in a space that leads to you initiating your healing!
