  • How to Choose the Best Color for Your Smile!
    Nov 13 2023

If you’re like me, I am constantly being inspired by the beauty of nature. For example, I was recently in Utah working on my new product and I was surrounded by spectacular red rock formations like the ones at Angel’s Landing. Then I went to Colorado and I found myself in the incredible Rocky Mountains. And in case you missed some of the pics I shared on Instagram, I decided to surprise my girlfriend and get engaged!

My goal as a cosmetic dentist has always been to become the best I can be. I treat my work like an art form. Pablo Picasso famously said: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” I would love to hear from you about “your art.”

What are you working on that you’re proud of? Send me a DM on Instagram or email me back from our newsletter and let me know. I’ll select a few of you and give you a shout out on the next podcast!

Speaking of the podcast… the next episode is about how I go about choosing the right color for our smile makeovers to match each patient’s style and complexion. I hope you enjoy this new episode as much as I did recording it. Wherever you are in your journey, wishing you much continued happiness and good health!

  • Quite possibly the best Dermatologist on the planet
    Jun 13 2023

It’s my pleasure to introduce you to my good friend and dental patient, Dr. Dhaval G. Bhanusali, MD FAAD — but you can call him Dr. B for short. His reputation among some of the most successful in business, sports and entertainment precedes him as he might just be the best dermatologist on the planet.

In our latest podcast episode we discuss all things health and dermatology as well as one of Dr. B’s most successful achievements to date. You may have seen his client Martha Stewart make history, beating out Maye Musk (age 74) as the person with the most life experience (age 81) to make the coveted cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. By the way, the SI issue featuring Martha has outperformed all other previous covers, including those with supermodels Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Elle Macpherson, Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum who were arguably in their prime at the time.

Dr. B also breaks down his relationship with client, Hailey Bieber and his role in helping her develop both the science in formulation and aesthetic results with her breakthrough hit cosmetic brand, rhode. You are not going to want to skip this episode!

  • You're Probably Brushing Your Teeth Wrong | The Top 10 Worst Oral Hygiene Habits
    Jun 10 2023

In the 2005 movie version of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp, [young] Willy Wonka’s dentist father was obsessed with clean teeth to the point of depriving poor Willy of any kind of candy treats. We know how this story ends, it’s a very emotionally disturbed and traumatized adult Willy Wonka!

Despite having both of my parents as dentists, that was not my experience at all. I’m pretty lucky to have amazing parents who knew how raise us right. Yes, they encouraged us to eat healthy food, but they were not extreme and taught us to eat (and drink) in moderation. We learned the value of good habits like daily teeth brushing. You could always find a toothbrush at my house!

Establishing good habits and a having regular routine is the key to most things that are worth doing and have a positive payoff. The thing about habits is, it takes about 21 days (on average) to create a habit — and just one day to break it! Consistency is key.

In the case of clean teeth, it's not about the quantity of how often you brush…It's not how hard you brush your teeth either. It's not even how often you brush your teeth. The sweet spot is in the quality of brushing.

If you're an aggressive brusher, you could remove the enamel. You could cause gum recession and more. In this podcast you’ll learn how to properly brush your teeth like an expert. We also explore the 10 worst habits that lead to poor health.

  • There Definitely is Something about Mary Shenouda | Nutrition Edition
    Jun 6 2023

This week’s podcast is all about nutrition, featuring private chef and nutrition expert Mary Shenouda. There is definitely something about Mary! It’s true that she prepares custom meals for some of the West Coast’s biggest names in sports. From Major League Soccer stars to players on the NBA Champion Warriors team, she’s at the top of her game. She’s also an entrepreneur and business owner creating her own custom product called Phat Fudge, a little idea that sprouted from her home kitchen in Venice Beach, California.

Mary used to have significant autoimmune issues and debilitating migraines. It got so bad some days at her high-paced tech sales job in Silicon Valley that she would have to take breaks under her desk with a blackout sleep mask and ice packs on her neck just to get through a regular work day.

She visited countless doctors with so-called professionals who either dismissed her symptoms as “mental issues” or misdiagnosed her with other problems that were unsubstantiated by lab results. Frustrated with years of pain and suffering, Mary concluded that her last option was to take responsibility for researching and solving her own health issues and leaned heavily in to nutrition.

She developed a 7-day system called the Gut Reset that gave her body and collaborating doctors new information about how to heal by eliminating and adding certain foods to her diet. Flash forward years later and now she’s thriving and helping others to live healthier lives with food and lifestyle changes.

Many of Mary’s clients need to perform their job at the highest levels. The good news is that there is not a one-size-fits all diet for everyone. This is an “inside job” where customizing to your personal biology matters. Like sleep, exercise (and regular oral hygiene care), nutrition is one of the most important building blocks to good health.

I hope you enjoy this delicious episode of The Crown Prince of Brooklyn as much as I did. Wishing you much continued happiness and good health!

  • Dr. Geoffrey | Gum Lifts and All Things Pink and Periodontal
    May 23 2023

This week I had the chance to reflect a bit more than usual on my relationship with my younger brother Geoffrey, who is sandwiched in between me and my youngest brother Brandon. Btw, if you’ve been to Bensonhurst Dental New York, you know that there’s basically a Rubinshtein in every room — and probably running around the halls as we often consult with each other on our patients. We’re a tight knit family that also happens to work together.

My father, Dr. Alex as well as my mother Dr. Marina — and younger brother Dr. Geoffrey and I are often in the office late into the night helping our patients. You wouldn’t know it by looking at us all grown up now but Geoff and I used to get into some heated tussles at home when we were younger. Nothing too bad, just normal sibling rivalry stuff like throwing dumbbell weights at each other in a battle of sorts that left giant holes in our walls. Mom was furious!

But as we got older I knew I wanted to follow in my parents footsteps and go to dental school at NYU. Being the first-born son with a small amount of high-achiever energy, I did undergrad in 3 years (instead of 4) to get right into being a dentist. Dr. Geoffrey also exhibited a lot of talent and promise and expressed his interested in becoming a plastic surgeon. But the dental practice and thriving business created by my father and mother established a special opportunity for all of us and we convinced Dr. Geoff to pursue a periodontal speciality to round out our family team.

Wow, what a great decision! Dr. Geoffrey has become one of the foremost periodontal specialists in New York and the country with his skills and experience. We are lucky to have him — but I’m feeling extra lucky as his sibling to call him my brother.
