  • Strengthening Reef Conservation Through Data and AI
    Mar 15 2023

In this episode, Manisha Tank speaks to Dr Manuel Gonzalez Rivero, Research Team Leader at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), and Romain Groleau, Managing Director and ANZ Technology Sustainability Lead at Accenture. Together, we explore how to capitalise on sustainable technology to fast track and upscale coral reef monitoring, how various technologies—such as artificial intelligence (AI), cloud and analytics—will have a key role to play in reducing carbon emissions, and how Accenture’s sustainable technology initiatives are making a positive environmental impact in the Asia-Pacific region.

We shine a light on how coral reefs—the rainforests of the sea—are ecologically diverse, structurally complex and critically endangered. Taking a deep dive into AIMS' work, we learn from Dr Rivero how the institute has been collaborating with Accenture, the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), coral reef scientists, conservation practitioners, technology experts and people from all around the world to improve reef conservation using a groundbreaking open access tool called ReefCloud.

Romain also shares how the conservation community can scale the technology across other ecosystems, demonstrating the unlimited potential of technology, design and expert knowledge to transform how we solve the world’s greatest challenges.
