Ep. 30 - Shingles (Varicella Zoster)

  • Resumen

  • Shingles, also called herpes zoster, is a disease that triggers a painful skin rash. It is caused by the same virus as chickenpox, and about one in three adults who had chickenpox will develop this condition later in life.

About 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles in their lifetime. An estimated 1.2 million people get shingles each year in this country.

Anyone who's had chickenpox may develop shingles. After you've had chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in your body for the rest of your life. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles. It isn't known what reactivates the virus, but thought to be due to decreased immune system brought on by stress.

In this podcast we discuss the clinical appearance and symptoms of shingles, vaccines available and other preventive methods to reduce your risk for developing shingles, possible long term side effects, and treatment options.
