  • Statistics show that only 32% of fourth graders across the country can read proficiently on average, and students in marginalized communities have much less reading comprehension than their peers.
    Podcast host Cary Broussard met Alicia Mitchell while volunteering with the nonprofit organization Reading Partners, which provides one-on-one tutoring sessions to strengthen phonemic awareness in elementary school children.

    Cary interviews Alicia about her experiences as a tutor and how she has overcome adversity and obstacles in her own life. Alicia grew up being her own best advocate. She says she became her own mentor in her continuous journey of lifelong learning - earning certifications and degrees to strengthen her commitment to helping others better themselves.
