Episode 2- Gaynor Whalley and Dan Leverett

  • Resumen

  • During this episode of the podcast, Katy and Kayleigh talk to Gaynor Whalley and Dan Leverett about their appreciative inquiry work in an acute hospital's CAU. Gaynor is a registered nurse, currently working as a Clinical Quality Lead in a busy acute hospital. Her career has predominantly focused on acute surgery with a more recent move to intermediate care and frailty within the community division. She is passionate about Human Factors and patient safety and is a proudly certified Terema Human Factors trainer. She has lead and supported a learning culture with after action reviews and celebration of the things that have gone well, even in incidents. She is focusing currently on developing an 'active hospitals approach to inpatient units, aiming to reduce avoidable harms from reconditioning. Dan is a registered nurse, qualified for 10 years and recently taking on a ward leader position. His background is in trauma and orthopaedics, and he has now moved to frailty within the community division of a busy acute hospital. Dan has been an effective change agent, taking a positive approach to new ways of working and embedding continuous improvement. The work Gaynor and Dan have undertaken has been inspired by national initiatives, such as End PJ paralysis and Recondition the Nation, meaning that they were able to take the learning from these programmes and adapt it tonthwir local setting and patient populations. This brings in a strong Learning from Excellence theme to the conversation- building on the success of others to drive improvement in our own areas. The conversation focuses on recognising how, as humans, we move towards the good. This strongly references the poetic principle of Appreciative inquiry- what we focus on grows, as well as the anticipatory principle- images inspire action. By giving people positive goals to focus on we can support them to move forwards. The work also includes a strong lesson in the importance of everybody's role in a multidisciplinary team- not only therapists can be involved in therapy, and every body's role is truly vital in making this fabulous project so successful. We're so grateful to have been able to undertake this conversation, and so thrilled to be able to share this incredible and powerful piece of work with you all. We'd love to read your comments on the episode, hear from people who have done something similar, and create a vibrant conversation around reconditioning, reconditioning and how we can use Appreciative Inquiry to improve outcomes for our frailer populations.
