  • Episode 3 talks to the wonderful Claire Cox.

Claire is an experienced nurse of over 25 years. She has worked in numerous specialities in the NHS including cardiology and intensive care and in different places around the world, from being a repatriation nurse to volunteering in refugee camps and striking up collaborations with nurses in America.

After winning the Kent Surrey and Sussex Patient Safety Prize in 2016 for her work in cardiac arrest and medical emergency teams, Claire went on to complete the Darzi fellowship ( clinical leadership) in April 2019. Following this fellowship Claire started working with the charity, Patient Safety Learning. This gave Claire insight and contacts with leaders from inside and outside of the NHS.

Claire co-founded and chairs the Patient Safety Management Network in June 2021, this network has grown to nearly 1000 members nationwide and meets weekly to discuss the evolving management of patient safety. The purpose of this network is to collaborate, learn together, share and provide peer support.

Our conversation looks at how the Patient Safety Management Network was created using Appreciative Inquiry at its heart. Claire dared to dream and picture a thriving network of diverse individuals, shared her dream with others and took a leap into the unknown to create a shared space.

We also talk about the future of Appreciative Inquiry in Patient Safety and how PSIRF (Patient Safety Incident Response Framework) can guide the way to a new, more generative culture. This conversation truly shows the power of Appreciative Inquiry’s Constructionist principle (that our beliefs determine our actions, and that our thoughts and actions come from relationships), the Anticipatory Principle (that when we create positive images of our future, we are more likely to make decisions and take actions that help us reach our future) and the Wholeness Principle (that we can achieve better outcomes when we hear everyone’s perspective and include everyone in the room). What an inspiration!
