Liz Allan speaks to Ian Trott, a passionate advocate for electric vehicles and a seasoned freelance graphic designer. Ian discusses his early fascination with alternate power sources, from driving a Peugeot 205 with lead-acid batteries in the mid-1990s to experimenting with LPG conversions and test-driving a Nissan LEAF. Ian also shares his frustrations with the barriers hindering accessibility, particularly for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. He speaks about the impact of VAT on electricity at public charge points and the disparities in charging options for people of different income levels and living situations. Ian passionately advocates for accessible, affordable charging solutions, including the pressing need for better-designed charging stations. As a left-leg amputee, Ian speaks about how EVs are a lifeline for many disabled individuals due to their more straightforward operation, but accessibility for EV charging is lacking. Throughout the discussion, Ian emphasises the significance of mandated accessibility guidelines, such as PAS 1899, for ensuring truly accessible public charging stations.
