    Jul 11 2024

    SUMMER SAVING SERIES:

DIY with Mr. fig & farm (at home)

In today's conversation with Greg, aka Mr. fig & farm (at home), you'll hear that the secret to becoming a proficient DIYer isn't that you were born with it...it's that you've experimented and practiced. Greg shares that his previous build experience was building LEGOS. No high school woodshop, no hours spent with grandpa in the shop on the weekends...LEGOS.

Greg shares practical advice for those getting started and it's all wrapped in kindness - "be gracious to yourself because you will make mistakes along the way."

Hear which builds we have done in our own home (we've built something for every room, except one!), how his first DIY build was 'cute' in the baby-deer-walking kind of way, and what build I'm hoping he'll say yes to as we continue putting a stamp on our own home.

And...get a behind the scenes look at the fig & farm (at home) home by becoming a Design Bestie. Come say 'hey!' and you'll be put on the list!

Adding Character in your Home the DIY Way

    with Michelle Castro

Big DIY projects were never an option for my guest, Michelle, when she was renting her home. Once she finally bought her house, the proverbial gloves went on! Starting with the demo of an inconveniently placed fireplace turned into countless home projects and now she's moving beyond her home and helping others. In today's conversation I'm chatting with my friend Michelle about the mistakes she's learned along the way, the tools she would recommend and words of wisdom for stepping outside your own comfort zone.

Michelle's zest for life is evident in her energy and we hope that it inspires YOU to finally tackle that first DIY project. When you do, come and share it with us inside of our community...can't wait to see!

    Jun 27 2024

    Summer Saving Series:

Using Facebook Marketplace as a reseller

w/ Elaine Mingus from Curb Vulture

Have you ever wondered what happens to those piles of furniture, artwork, and misc. items of what appears to be trash on the sides of the road? Meet Elaine, a self proclaimed curb vulture, who willingly scouts out the finds so she can resell them for a profit.

In this espied you'll hear Elaine's story - how she found herself $10k in debt and wondered where her life's choices had taken her. Desperate to try to make ends meet, she began selling small things from around home, on Facebook Marketplace in order to make a little cash for everyday expenses. What went from one sale turned into a full-time job where Elaine had $15k months in revenue from her furniture flips.

You'll hear her inspiring story that went from survivor of a horrific beginning to a thriver - and how she's using her story of redemption to spread hope to the masses.

    Summer Savings Series:

How to score the GOOD STUFF on FB Marketplace

In today's episode I'm talking with Alissa, a client of mine. Just like you and me, Alissa has Pottery Barn taste, but a Target budget. Yet every time I talked with her on our decorating coaching calls (aka Decorating SOS calls) she would always show me her latest name brand home decor find. Both big and small, Alissa seemed to have a knack for scoring the good stuff...the REALLY good stuff.

But like the thrifting strategies I shared in episodes #257 and #258, Alissa's finds weren't dumb luck. They were strategic.

She's sharing her top strategies for shopping successfully on FB Marketplace and one of them is SO GOOD, you're GUARANTEED to score the good stuff too!

Summer Savings Series: Shopping at Thrift Stores pt. 2 10 (+6 more) things I ALWAYS look for!

In today's episode we are wrapping up our series on how to effectively and efficiently shop SUCCESSFULLY at thrift stores. Why do some people always seem to find the good stuff? Because they have a system...go back and listen to Episode 257 so you can learn 7 tips for shopping successfully.

Today I'm sharing 16 things I ALWAYS look for. They are part of my aesthetic and when I know what design elements I gravitate to, that I like decorating my home with, I can pin point them easier (using my 7 tips from last week) and be more successful at curating home decor items on the cheap.

Curating your home decor items at thrift stores is a wonderful way to find items that are more personal and less generic than you'd find at a big box store. KNOWING WHAT TO LOOK FOR is a process, but one worth learning so you can create a carefully curated home.

    Summer Savings Series:

    Shopping at Thrift Stores

Creating a home that inspires you, delights you and one that you are proud of doesn't have to cost a lot. But sometimes it takes more than shopping the house and using what you already have - sometimes you need to shop for the items in need. Curating your home decor at thrift stores is one of my FAVORITE ways to personalize your home in a way that shopping at big box stores (even on the cheap), just can't accomplish.

You may LOVE thrift store shopping or HATE it. Or, you may be fascinated by the idea but feel like you never find anything GOOD, but somehow everyone else does. And you may wonder why everyone else has the best thrift stores, when in fact, it's likely NOT the thrift store, but the strategy you use to shop them. In today's episode I'm sharing my top 7 tips for shopping at thrift stores SUCCESSFULLY - so you can walk away with enviable hauls more than you walk away with duds. This is the first part of the summer savings series where we will be diving into different ways you can save money AND have a home that you can't stop gushing about. If you are not subscribed to the show, be sure to do that so you don't miss all the tips coming your way this summer!

  • 256 // 3 excuses I hear about people not creating a home they love - maybe one of them is yours!
    Jun 4 2024

Three of the most common things I hear from you:

    * "I have kids so I can't have nice things."

    * "I don't have any money to make changes."

    * "I don't know where to start."

Today is the last Quick Tip Tuesday I'll be releasing until the beginning of August, but like all good teachers, I'm leaving you with some homework - something for you to think about over the next eight weeks. Maybe you'll plug in one of these episodes each week until my Quick Tip Tuesdays return.

In today's episode I'm sharing I'm sharing the three most common excuses I get for why people don't take action on creating homes that feel like a respite, inspiring, functional and beautiful.

    1. I have kids, so I can't have nice things. B.S. You can have nice things. Either you choose to believe that nice things come with a hefty price tag or you have limited boundaries to keep those nice things nice.

    2. I have no money. If I had a dollar for every time I heard this, I would be living large in a lakeside mansion eating bonbons for breakfast. It's true, you may not have a pile of cash lying around just waiting to be thrown into the proverbial fire, but there are SO many changes you can make without spending any money at all or less money than your last trip to Target where you promised you'd only be picking up toothpaste.

TUNE IN EVERY FRIDAY through July for my Summer Savings Series where I give you practical tips for shopping on less, doing DIY more and strategies for saving big.

    3. I don't know where to start. Starting can be overwhelming, frustrating, confusing, debilitating. I get it. Here are three FREE ways to start this summer while the kids are splashing in the pool while you're sipping your iced tea: A. Listen to the podcast B. Read the blog C. Join the Facebook Group

  • 255 // Do you see your home's design potential? A behind the scenes look at how I pulled together an open concept home using one piece of art as inspiration
    May 31 2024

Do you wish you could have someone just come in and wave a magic wand to show you your home's potential?

    It'd be nice, right?

To have someone come in and show you which colors they'd choose for the walls, what area rug they'd recommend for the living room - along with the chairs, the couch, the side tables, the lamps, the artwork...ALL the details.

Oh, and it wouldn't it be nice to know that they were all the right measurements for your space, the right lengths, the right depth, the right width, the right scale.

Don't forget making sure all the little details are taken care of, like the specific design elements that make your home cohesive: wood finishes, metal finishes, basket weaves, textures, colors...

ALL OF IT is inside a Custom Design Board

(you'll hear me refer to it as a Custom Mood board...same thing).

Oh...and don't forget...you don't have to leave your home at all during the process. The design interview happens virtually, the design board is delivered to you (with the rationale) virtually and you can shop...yup...virtually all from the Custom Design Board.

In today's episode I'm sharing a sneak peak at a design rationale for my client Jen, who purchased two custom design boards for her living room and two for her dining room. You'll hear me explain my inspiration piece, the direction of the design and the reason behind the recommendation for swapping out stainless steel handles on her kitchen cabinets.
