Join me as I pick Wade Blevin's brain about the Sam's One Bug, his faith, and his other outdoor hobby you'll probably never guess.

Wade's father, Sam, came up with the One Bug in the mid-80's and since then has become an extremely popular fly to tie and use. I learned about the fly, which in turn led me to link up with Wade, through the Redeye Bartram's Bass Workshop I attended in 2023 (you can hear my review of the workshop in episode 2).

Since inheriting the fly and heritage of giving away the Sam's One Bugs, Wade has given away over fifteen thousand of these flies. Wade has put his own touch to the tradition by including the story of the Perfect Gift with each gifting of flies meaning he has shared the gospel with hundreds, if not thousands, of people.

In the conversation I ask Wade about any tips or special tools which are out there to help folks interested in tying the Sam's One Bug. This episode dives into organizing and putting on a casting contest. This isn’t a casting contest for models or movies, but for anglers to see who has the most skill when it comes to throwing fishing lures and bait.

Join me as I give you some considerations for putting on your own event as a fun competition for your group or as an outreach event for your church. I’ll discuss some of the things we did at my church’s first casting contest earlier this year, what materials were needed to put it on, and things I learned in hindsight to make future casting contests better, safer, and run more efficiently.

On this brief episode I reintroduce the show as I am working on rebooting the podcast. I've been meaning to take some time to discuss what Filled Quiver Outdoors is and what my goal for the podcast is. I end up rambling a bit, but if you've ever wondered about what the backstory of Filled Quiver Outdoors is and what the symbolism behind the logo is, this is the episode for you.

I also mention some of the changes to the podcast moving forward including release dates and format, but we will still be focused on filling your quiver with God and the great outdoors through outdoors and faith-based topics and conversations.

The Filled Quiver Outdoors Podcast is back after an unplanned break with what I think is my longest interview to date. I considered breaking it into two episodes, but because it's such a good conversation, I decided to go ahead and leave it all together as a long format show. We spend the first part of the conversation talking about how Hermit Company came to be and bamboo rod building before talking about the item that led me to discover the company, the Palmer.

We also talked about their film "Charred," which you can find on their YouTube Channel along with their new film, "Turmat: Blood, Sweat, and Trout." Both of which are excellent short films.
