Genesis 46-47

BIG IDEA
God goes with His people wherever they go.

TWO truths to know that God is with us:
1. As we see God’s presence in Egypt, we also see God’s presence in our lives.
2. As God promised to go with His people to Egypt, God has given us Jesus and the Holy Spirit to go with us.

THREE foreshadowing events that point toward Jesus:
1. As Joseph granted “a holding in the land of Egypt” to God’s people, so Jesus grants “a holding” in God’s kingdom to God’s people.
2. As Joseph provided food for God’s people (47:12), so Jesus provides the living bread for God’s people (John 6:35).
3. As Joseph saved God’s people from starvation, so Jesus saves God’s people from sin and gives them eternal life (John 3:16).

Genesis 43:1-15

THREE final parallels between Joesph and Jesus:
1. As God sent Joseph to Egypt to save his family, so God sent Jesus to earth to save his people.
2. As the brothers bowed before Joseph, so people will bow down before Jesus.
3. As Joseph invited his family to settle in Egypt, so Jesus invites his people to settle in his Father’s kingdom.

Genesis 41:1-57

BIG IDEA
God exalts his suffering servant to kingship in order to save the world.

FOUR ways to position ourselves to be used by God:
1. We will be released when God is ready. (vv. 1-16)
2. We must speak truth even when it isn’t favorable. (vv. 17–37)
3. We will receive an expected reward. (vv. 38–46)
4. We must carry out our responsibility given to us by God. (vv. 47–57)

Mark 9:28-29

FOUR guidelines for fasting:
1. Jesus never gave a spiritual command regarding the frequency or duration of our fasts.
2. Fasting must always have a spiritual purpose in mind.
3. A normal fast involves abstaining from all food but not from water.
4. Fasting should be done in private.

BIG IDEA
God’s presence is with us in times of prosperity as well as times of adversity.

FIVE specific parallels between Joseph and Jesus:
1. As God was with Joseph, so God was with Jesus (Luke 2:40; John 1:32).
2. As Joseph was a blessing to one family, so Jesus was a blessing to all the families of the earth.
3. As Joseph was tempted by Potiphar’s wife to take a shortcut to power, so Jesus was tempted by Satan to take a shortcut to power (Matt 4:9).
4. As Joseph was silent when falsely accused, so Jesus was silent when falsely accused (Matt 26:63).
5. As the innocent Joseph was punished with prison, so the innocent Jesus was punished with death.
