    Join us on our with our special guest, 37 year veteran, retired Miami Dade Fire Chief, Dave Downey. Tune in as we take you through his career that began when he joined the fire explorer program with the City of Lauderhill many years ago. He was hired in August of 1982 as a Firefighter with the City of Sunrise and just grew from there.
    • Certified as a paramedic - Became a Haz May Technician - Certified as a Driver Operator - Met my future wife. She had 1 year seniority on me. Married in 1986 - January 1988 – Hired by Metro Dade (now Miami-Dade Fire Rescue) as a Firefighter/Paramedic -Assigned to Station 11 in Carol City (now Miami Gardens). - May 1991 Promoted to Lieutenant - One of the original members of FL-TF1 (USAR Task Force) - Deployed to various Hurricanes, earthquakes, and the AA plane crash in Columbia - Worked at Station 11 during Hurricane Andrew (1992) - Assigned to Station 7 as well as working relief on Air Rescue. - Developed Flashover Training programs in Palm Beach, Coral Springs and the Broward Fire Academy - Taught various technical rescue training programs - November 1999 promoted to Captain - Assigned to Special Operations- Tasked with implementing a second full-time Air Rescue operation - Became the US&R Bureau OIC - Deployed as part of FL-TF1 to the WTC post-September 11th - May 2002 promoted to Battalion Chief - August 2003 appointed Division Chief, North Operations, Responsible for 4 Battalions in the northeast part of the County - August 2004 assigned as Chief of EMS - April 2005 assigned as Chief of Training and Safety (My dream job!) - Deployed to New Orleans post Hurricane Katrina - No training facility but tasked with an aggressive hiring program. Trained 400 firefighters in 18 months - Responsible for the final design and oversaw construction of the $25M Training Facility - March 2010 appointed Assistant Chief and assigned Technical Services Fire Prevention, Communications, Logistics, and Training - Deployed to Hait Earthquake - May 2011 appointed Chief of Operations - February 2013 appointed as the 12th Chief of Department - Challenging first couple of years with budget. Faced with laying off 59 firefighters in my first year. - Retired June 2019 - Hired by State Fire Marshal to coordinate disaster response - Deployed to Surfside building collapse. Coordinated US&R operations for 19 days.

    Join us on our Youtube Channel with our special guest, Thomas Von Essen New York City's 30th fire commissioner after serving as a member of the FDNY for 26 years. Following two years of active duty in the U.S. Naval Submarine Service, He went to proby school in May 1970. He was assigned to Ladder Company 42 in the South Bronx, where he spent spend over 15 years as a firefighter and also became the company delegate to the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA). We will get the whole skinny. You don’t want to miss this one. In 1993 Von Essen was elected as President of the Uniformed Firefighters Association representing the department's firefighters. He was appointed the 30th FDNY Commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani on April 15, 1996, and served in that position until the end of the Giuliani Administration on December 31, 2001, nearly four months after the September 11, 2001 attacks. We will be paying Tribute to FDNY FF Andrew Fredericks who died on 9-11-01. Andrew A. Fredericks‚ 40‚ was a firefighter in Squad 18 and a 21-year FDNY veteran. For those who never had the pleasure of meeting or hearing of Andy's work, know this: Andy was a nationally recognized gifted instructor and author who made a tremendous impact in the fire service. Andy was co-author of the FDNY’s Engine Company Operations Manual. He was a New York State-certified fire instructor‚ an instructor for the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs‚ an adjunct lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice‚ and taught at fire service training meetings across the country. The father of two had bachelor’s degrees in political science‚ and public safety and fire science‚ and a master’s degree in fire protection management. Most importantly, Andy was a kind and humorous man, a friend to many, and a devoted husband and father. Andy left us with a wealth of knowledge. He touched many across the country through his articles, hands-on training, lectures, and videos. His no-nonsense, back-to-basics approach to combating today's complicated and dangerous fires brought with it a strong following. The firefighters who were blessed to witness his instruction have an obligation to carry on his work.     GETTIN’ SALTY EXPERIENCE PODCAST Ep.215 : Our special guest will be 13 year FDNY veteran FF Rich Kirrstetter. He joined the FDNY in June 1965 and was assigned to Ladder 33. In 1969 he became a charter member of Ladder 17-2 when it was formed. In 1972 he transferred back to Ladder 33. He unfortunately had to retire from the FDNY in 1978 due to a LOD injury. He was a member of the following departments through the years...Mount Vernon FD New York, Lansing FD North Carolina, Pond Mountain FD North Carolina, Mount Pleasant FD, North Carolina, North Carolina Forest Service, and Ashe County Honor Guard, North Carolina. He has made quite a few rescues throughout his career...including several as a proby. Pretty sure he hasn't seen any fire. We will get the whole skinny. You don’t want to miss this one.
