Generation Green is the latest documentary from Heidi McKillop and ASN Productions. She is a proud transplanted Albertan from the maritimes, with a true passion for the west and western interests.

In this episode we trace Heidi's unorthodox journey into filmmaking, and then get right down to brass tax. We dissect Generation Green, which is available on youtube now. It begins with a focus on the big green push to a renewable future, but at what cost? It's a fantastic and well-balanced documentary, that ultimately becomes a film about citizens and how industrial projects can infringe on our everyday lives. As she goes on her investigative journey it takes her to Waterton National Park, where a massive wind turbine project, the Riplinger Wind Project from Trans Alta was proposing to build 37 wind turbines. This did not make the locals happy in the slightest, and as a journalist she ends up getting to know the determined folk of the areas that could end up affected .

She dives even further into the renewable rabbit hole as she speaks with the Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, NJ Ayuk, on the poor working conditions in the Cobalt mining industry, a necessary ingredient for lithium ion batteries for EV's. Slave labour and corruption are rampant there, not to mention the mining industry in the Congo is primarily China-owned.

Some questions for us all-Are solar panels the answer, and are wind turbines the answer to climate change? Is climate change real? We dive deep into this conversation. What she ultimately discovers during her research for the film is that any new alternative energy source has only been augmented by fossil fuels, but it's a step. Is it necessary? Maybe. Should we always aim to be better in our treatment of the planet? 100% yes. Should the renewable sector be scrutinized to the same due diligence needed during the approval process that already applies to the energy sector? Also 100% yes. And what happens at the end of life for solar panels and wind turbines? Are they recyclable? Sounds like a future problem that needs to be handled now. This is something Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has been an advocate for, and we speak of that in here as well.

Please join me in this fantastic conversation primarily about Generation Green, and if you're a fan of documentaries, you definitely need to put this on your lists of must-watch!

  • GND#20 with Claire Masikewich Director of Marketing & Childhood Cancer Advocate
    May 14 2024

Claire Masikewich had the seemingly normal storybook tale of a healthy young family of four. Until the fateful day of May 26, 2023.

Sloane Masikewich, 5 and half years old and the youngest sibling to sister Indy, wasn't feeling very well one may long weekend. Her signs and symptoms didn't seem too serious for anybody to fuss about, but she kept on getting worse including fever, body aches and pains. No big deal right?

What started as a routine 811 call to Alberta Health Link, then a visit to Alberta Children's Hospital, it soon became apparent there was much more going on inside of little Sloane's body than met the eye.

She was devastatingly diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma the next day, a rare and high risk form of cancer among children. There are only 1500 cases annually in Canada, or up to 237 in Alberta alone. She has had a long road of surgeries, chemo, radiation, stem cell transplants and immunotherapy since this time.

The question coming to mind now for the family is, why does there seem to be a lack of funding directly forwarded to pediatrics for research into childhood cancer, and to what risk are we leaving our children given these extreme doses to beat these diseases. Though Sloane is in remission a year later almost to the day, she is not out of the woods yet.

Claire has become an extremely vocal voice in the childhood advocacy space starting up campaigns such as "Strong Like Sloane", and "Heartbeats for Hope"

In this episode we tackle the entire journey for the Masikewich family.

  • GND#18 with Dr. William Kent-Cardiac Surgeon, Libin Cardiovascular Institute
    Apr 30 2024

Dr. William (Bill) Kent saved my life, twice. That is his job.

Being a cardiac surgeon, a Director of Surgical, and a Clinical Assistant Professor-Cardiac Sciences at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada it's safe to say Dr. Bill is one busy guy. And after this phenomenal discussion on everything hearts, that is putting it lightly. We are lucky to have him here in our backyards saving hearts, working out of the world renowned Libin Cardiovascual Institute.

We go through in some detail, both of my heart surgeries, because how often do you get to speak in a studio setting with your own Heart Surgeon! What an awesome opportunity.

Back, in the summer of 2015 I was told I would need to have corrective valve repair done to my mitral valve, and the best option would be a procedure called Minimally Invasive Valve Repair. It worked. Sort of. We discuss together that sometimes medicine isn't perfect, and that my first surgery eventually failed. I would need to go back in 5 years later, almost to the day, but this time open heart surgery, and it would be a total valve replacement to fix the issue. Luckily I'm a pro at having surgery, having had 16 major surgeries in my lifetime for various injuries. What can I say I played hard!

In this episode we ALSO get into Dr. Kent's long history of schooling and education and his path to Calgary, heart health, preventative measures, signs and symptoms, obesity, the workload of a heart surgeon, future innovation, the Marvel that is the Libin Institute here in Calgary, the Libin family and their generous donations, and so much more.

Having gone through their care, I've become passionate about saving hearts and spreading the word on the #1 global killer on the planet, with 17.9 million deaths annually. We have a lot of work to do! Enjoy the listen......I know I sure did!

  • GND#17 with Kevin Humeny, CFO Parcel B Ltd.
    Apr 23 2024

Kevin Humeny is the Managing Director, and CFO of Parcel B Limited. It's a savvy Calgarian Private Equity Company that has been making some terrific headway in that space. He also happens to be my brother in law! I am a lucky guy to have been able to welcome Kevin into the family some 6 years ago now. K2, as he is affectionately referred to around the households, has had quite the past.

Kevin is a walking numbers machine, having been a C.F.A. for quite some time, and this has helped him excel in all his business ventures. You wouldn't even begin to comprehend, however, that he started out as a Professional Motocross Racer in Canada! We rip through Kevin's racing journey, and all the crippling injuries he sustained from the rigours of the circuit.

In this episode we dive into many of his ventures including engineering, directional well planning in the oil and gas industry, then onto capital budgets for drilling programs at Conoco Phillips and Cenovus. Then onto his newest adventures where he has put is skill set to proper use in buying companies and helping manage them to optimize returns. Aside from this, as always, we get into politics, the federal budget, tackling orphan wells, and the big green push. We run through quite a few informative slides (viewable in the YOUTUBE version of this one), from drilling horizontal wells, to emissions numbers and china's ghg output, and inevitably into politics where we look at the bloating public sector vs private sector decline. There's some nice shots of him back in the racing days as well. Lots of nuggets in here folks, I sincerely hope you enjoy!!! This guy is a sharp cat!!!

  • GND#16 with Dan McLean Ward 13 City of Calgary Councillor
    Apr 16 2024
Dan McLean grew up living the farm life just outside of Camrose, Alberta, Canada. He grew up learning the values of work ethic and respecting others. Fast forward to his earlier working years, he took a chance on selling golf-carts, of all things. And he never looked back. His business rapidly exploded as he couldn't keep his farmland full of enough golf carts to keep up with the orders. His crowining achievement was winning a successful bid to work the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. He eventually sold the business and decided what the heck to do now that his three children were all grown up. Dan McLean decided to enter politics, and we dive right in on this one. He had always contemplated with the idea of politics, as his father himself ran at one time only losing by a few votes. So Dan entered into the Calgary Municipal election in 2021 and defeating long time incumbent Diane Colley-Urquhart....by a landslide. Dan is known to be extremely outspoken, and a man of principle. We get into everything from the muddy world of municipal politics, the botched Calgary Flames arena deal, Jyoti Gondek, and her climate agenda, Dan's voting record, the Hateful 8, and most importantly we really beat up the current council plans for the Blanket Rezone that will go through to Public Hearings in Calgary on April 22nd 2024. Sit back and enjoy because Dan is a real breath of fresh air when it comes to politicians. Polite. Honest. Opinionated. Decisive. Rational. and yes even sometimes controversial but he is not afraid! • GND#15 with Chanse Vigen 2023 World Champion Chuckwagon Driver
    Apr 9 2024

Chanse Vigen has spent his entire life on a horse. He had followed his Father, Mike Vigen, and his grandfather Ralph Vigen since he was a young cowboy with a whip in his back pocket hoping to just get tall enough to "reach the horn" (on a saddle) and to race like his family did before him. Many years later after spending almost 15 years as an Outrider on the racing circuit, he found himself thrust into the wagon. He never looked back. 2023 was an epic year for Chanse as he claimed the World Championship, and a broke a 61 year old record to boot.

We get into the entire history of the sport of Chuckwagon Racing as it pertains in particular to the Calgary Stampede. The generational bloodline that is Family Vigen. The treatment of the horses as a roster, but more importantly as part of their family. We get into operational costs and what goes into running a stable of a team of this size. We ALSO run over a clip that made National news whereby Chanse had to save a runaway Wagon during a race back in 2007-"Indiana Jones-type shit" We talk purse money in comparison between certain rodeos, advertising and sponsorhips, the grind of the circuit, and finally his incredible 2023 run. AND so much more, we had a blast during this episode, and we also had a special guest in Tom McCarthy, a special friend and hype man for Chanse Vigen race team. Saddle up partners!

  • GND#14 with Aaron Volpatti Ex NHLer/CognitivePerformanceCoach/Author/Speaker
    Apr 2 2024

Aaron Volpatti is the author of his current book Fighter-Defying the NHL Odds, and Cognitive Performance Coach/Speaker. Aaron grew up like most Canadian kids dreaming of making it big in hockey while living in the picturesque town of Revelstoke, British Columbia. While admittedly not the most talented kid around on the ice, once he ventured to the bigger cities, it became apparent to him he had a different kind of gift. This gift being toughness. However, it wasn't until later in life, entering his second year of junior hockey for the Vernon Vipers, where his toughness would be put to the ultimate test. We go through the terrifying events that took place that fateful summer where he would endure burns to over 40% of his body. A simple summer kick off and an end of hockey season party-turned nightmare for all.

We go through in detail the trauma he suffered and the long, long road to recovery. While in hospital, Aaron had nothing but time and loneliness with his thoughts. The events of that summer, whether he knew it or not, would eventually unleash a "superpower" deep within him. We go through the many other traumas that he had to go through along the way. For a kid that likely had no business making it to the NHL, he feels his newfound superpower, through his new Visualization techniques he discovered along the way, he ultimately was able to manifest his goals. This happens several times in his life. This is an important listen, an important read of his book, and I urge everyone to at least check out Aaron's business to gain some insight into what he offers to help people achieve greatness! Perhaps he can help you, your child, your friend or your organization.
