  • From Zero to One Sale a Day on Etsy: Step-by-Step Guide for Sellers
    Jul 2 2024

🌟🎉Join the #1 Etsy Community on the PLANET! IT’S FREE! https://www.handmadeandbeyond.com/habcommunity A positive community of like-minded Etsy sellers working together to grow their businesses. Don’t worry there are no spammers, scammers, or negativity inside 😀

Starting, building, and growing an Etsy shop can feel overwhelming. It’s easy to get lost in the big picture, especially when revenue goals seem out of reach. But what if I told you that breaking down these goals into manageable steps could make all the difference? Let’s dive into how you can average one sale a day or more on Etsy.

Think Small: Break Down Your Goals

When you set a big revenue goal, like $20,000 a year, it can seem insurmountable, especially when you’re starting from zero sales. But breaking it down into smaller, targeted chunks makes it more manageable:

    Monthly: 83 sales

    Weekly: 19 sales

    Daily: 3 sales

Now, aiming for three sales a day feels much more achievable. And if your average product price is $20, this breakdown puts you on the right track.

Pro Tip: Increase Your Revenue Per Customer

To make things even easier, try increasing your revenue per customer. This means you’ll need fewer sales to hit your target. But let’s focus on the core strategy for now.

Start Here: Focus on 1 Sale a Day

Before aiming for three sales a day, start by targeting one sale a day. Once you consistently hit this mark, you’ll find it easier to scale up. The key here is to shift your focus from the lag measure (the end result) to the lead measures (the actions that drive the result).

What Are Lag and Lead Measures?

Lag Measures: The end results you want, such as averaging one sale a day.

Lead Measures: The daily actions that lead to those results.

Many people focus on lag measures, like wanting to lose 20 pounds or save $50k, but just focusing on the end result won’t help you achieve it. Instead, you need to identify and consistently perform the actions that will lead to your desired outcome.

    Get More Traffic

For Etsy sellers, one common answer is to get more traffic to your shop. Here’s how:

    1. Open Your Wallet: Invest in paid ads.

    2. Roll Up Your Sleeves: Put in more work with strategies like:

    • Creating more listings

    • Conducting better SEO research

    • Improving your product photos

    • Producing more content

    • Enhancing your marketing efforts

    • Providing superior customer service

    Choose Your Lead Measures

Pick one or two of these lead measures to focus on daily. Track your actions and monitor your progress toward achieving more traffic and sales. After three months, evaluate your performance:

    • Are you getting more traffic?

    • Are you making more sales?

    • Have you been consistent with your lead measures?

    Stay the Course or Pivot

Based on your evaluation, decide whether to stay the course, pivot your strategy, or improve your consistency. The key is to rinse and repeat until you find what works best for you.

    Conclusion

This journey is much like your actual Etsy business – it’s not simple, but it’s comprehensive. By breaking down your goals and focusing on actionable steps, you can achieve that one sale a day milestone and beyond. Remember, consistency is key.

How Much Does It Cost to Start on Etsy?

Curious about the costs of starting an Etsy shop? Let’s break it down:

    Etsy Fees:

Listing Fee: $0.20 per item for 4 months, charged every time you list or relist an item.

Transaction Fee: 6.5% of the order total (including shipping and gift wrapping).

Processing Fee: Varies by country, but in the US it’s 3% + $0.25 per transaction.

    Example:

    Item Price: $25

Shipping Cost: $5 (paid by customer)

    Total Fees: 9.5% + $0.45 per sale

    Calculation:

    • Shipping: $5

    • Transaction and Processing Fees: $2.85 (9.5% of $30) + $0.45 = $3.30

    • Total Fees: $8.30

    • Take Home: $30 - $8.30 = $21.70 (about 72% of the total)

    Other Expenses:

    • Labor

    • Materials

    • Equipment

    • Shipping supplies

    • Taxes

    Advertising Costs:

    • Etsy Ads

    • Blank cost: $8

    • Shipping supplies: $2

    • Advertising: $5

    • Other expenses: $15

    • Total Costs: $23.30

    • Take Home: $30 - $23.30 = $6.70 (22% profit margin)

    Final Thoughts:

While starting on Etsy incurs about 10% in fees, it’s a trade-off for access to millions of potential buyers. For comparison:

    • Shopify: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction

    • eBay: 6-15% depending on the category

    • Amazon: Average 15%, can be up to 45%

Hey everyone, welcome back to the podcast! In today’s episode, we’re diving into Etsy’s recent announcement about retiring its old listing form. If you’re an Etsy seller, this update is crucial for you.

Etsy has decided to retire the old listing form that many of us have used to list items for sale. But don’t worry, they’ve assured us that we won’t miss any of our favorite features. The new and improved listing form is designed to be more streamlined and efficient, thanks to feedback from sellers like you.

Here are some of the key features of the new listing form:

Scroll No More: Navigation tabs help you quickly jump to different sections of your listing details, making the process faster and more seamless.

Optimize Smarter: The Performance tab displays performance data and reviews for your listings, making it easier to decide what types of edits to make.

Get a Sneak Peek: The listing preview feature lets you double-check your edits before publishing them live.

NEW! Skip the Mental Math: The profit calculator helps you efficiently estimate your profits while pricing your items.

However, some sellers have pointed out that a few features are missing in the new form. Etsy has listened to this feedback and made some adjustments. They announced that by June 25th, the following functionalities will be added to the new listing form:

    • Add manual translations to your listings

    • Enable your listings to appear on your Pattern site

    • Edit private, custom listings in the new form

    • See and edit all listing states (e.g., inactive or expired listings) in the new form

Tune in to this episode to get all the details about these changes and how they can help you save time and optimize your listings more effectively.
