Human Trafficking: A Survivor’s Story Evaluation and Credit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MedChat62 Target Audience This activity is targeted toward primary care providers, advanced providers and healthcare clinicians. Statement of Need According to the American Public Health Association, the health system plays an important role in identifying and treating victims of human trafficking. Estimates show that approximately 80 percent of human trafficking victims are women, and health care providers are often the first professionals to have contact with trafficked women and girls. One study found that close to 50 percent of trafficked individuals saw a health care professional during their exploitation. Clinicians need to be aware of red flags that their patient could be a victim of human trafficking, best practices for screening and assessing patients for trafficking, and their response as a health care professional, and resources for assisting the victims. Providers should know how to screen patients for human trafficking; and what to do if there are indicators of a potential victim of human trafficking. Objectives At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to: Identify red flags of human trafficking and opportunities for victim identification that can be missed by the healthcare provider.Highlight communication strategies for identifying potential human trafficking victims from the perspective of a victim.Discuss the significance and impact of compassion to the patient in the delivery of health care.
