  • Ep 51: Welcome to Season 3 - Sports Catch-Up / Season Preview
    Aug 14 2024

If I’m Honest with Julia Landauer is back for Season 3! In this episode, I give a recap and opinion on recent NASCAR, Formula 1, and Olympics news. I dive into why I’m bummed that Hailie Deegan isn’t racing full-time anymore, Lewis Hamilton’s comeback, and why it felt so important for USA Women’s Basketball to take the Gold Medal in the Olympics. I also address the fact that we are a mixed-allegiance household, with me rooting for the USA and my husband Ben rooting for France, and what that drama is like. I also share the new cadence for Season 3 of a new episode every other Wednesday and give a sneak peak into the theme of Season 3 solo episodes, which is human performance.

  • Ep 48: What is Psychological Safety?
    May 22 2024

What makes team members feel secure enough to push boundaries? How does leadership style impact a team’s willingness to take risks in the pursuit of progress? A lot of this comes down to “psychological safety,” a term coined by Amy Edmondson. In a recent virtual keynote, after being asked about psychological safety as it relates to team dynamics, Julia had to admit that she hadn’t heard the term before and would have to do research. So in this week’s episode of If I’m Honest, Julia Landauer explains what psychological safety is, how it relates to team member success, and how she’s incorporated the concept into working with racing teams.

  • Ep 46: The Psychology of Pre-Competition Rituals
    May 8 2024

Many athletes have a ritual they perform before competition. But why is that? In this episode of If I’m Honest, Julia Landauer explores why pre-competition rituals are so important for performance. Julia shares research from the University of Toronto that explains the effects rituals have on brain activity, she hypothesizes what happens if we don’t perform our rituals, and describes her own pre-race rituals. Julia also reached out to some of her racer friends to hear their pre-race rituals, which they generously shared via voice recordings.

  • Ep 45: Storytelling “The Moment” in Live Sports with Broadcaster Leigh Diffey
    May 1 2024

Sports broadcasters are “armed with being good storytellers, delivering the facts, doing peoples’ athletic performances justice, and having fun,” according to NBC broadcaster Leigh Diffey. With over 25 years of international broadcast experience across many different sports, Leigh Diffey is a master storyteller on this week’s guest on If I’m Honest with Julia Landauer. Discussing how broadcasting fell into his lap while in university, Leigh shares the moment he realized his natural enthusiasm for sports and competition organically translated to his announcing, keeping the audience engaged. Leigh explains the importance of having self-belief, the Aussie “Have A Go” mentality, as well as capitalizing on networking and nurturing relationships. Leigh describes how he lives for “the moment” of victory or failure in sports, and how that crescendo varies by sport. Julia and Leigh discuss the similarities between broadcasters and athletes, the technical elements of delivering a broadcast, and the delicate nature of needing to comment on controversies and tragedies, which both require empathy. Leigh closes out by sharing his pre-broadcast rituals, his distinction between being “on edge” and being “nervous,” and the one sport he hasn’t yet commented on that he’d like to.

  • Ep 44: My Opinions on Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department”
    Apr 24 2024

Taylor Swift released her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, on April 19, 2024. It wasn’t just a regular album, it was a double album (with The Anthology), spanning 31 songs and over two hours. As a Swiftie herself, Julia Landauer was really looking forward to this album and gives her opinions on TTPD on this week’s episode of If I’m Honest with Julia Landauer. Julia explains what she particularly loves about Taylor Swift’s songwriting, the pivotal song that broke down the fourth wall for her, and her ritual for listening to a new Taylor Swift album. Julia then dives into three songs that caught her attention on TTPD, one thing she really doesn’t like about Taylor Swift’s songwriting, and a specific lyric that marries Swifties and motorsports fans. Julia ends with some final thoughts on the album, including where TTPD lands on her Taylor Swift Album Hierarchy List.
