Our guest this week is Edward James Olmos, an award-winning actor and director who has endeared himself to millions of fans by vowing to never accept a role that demeaned Latinos or the Latino community, even if it meant walking away from a lucrative pay day.

Our guest this week is Professor Gerardo Gonzalez, a Cuban refugee and son of an auto mechanic who defied the odds by becoming a leading educator and the Dean of a major American university.

Gaby Pacheco is a nationally recognized immigrant rights leader. As a young girl, Gaby was told that her undocumented status would prevent her from ever attending college or doing many of the things her peers simply took for granted. Rather than letting the no's stop her, she used them to fuel her quest for change. We'll hear about her undocumented immigrant experience, her many helpers along the way, and her mission to revamp our outdated immigration system. 

Our guest this week has lived through the unimaginable and managed to turn it into a passion for taking a stand and making a difference. Fred Guttenberg lost his daughter Jaime on February 14, 2018 in the Parkland shooting. Since then, gun safety has become his life's mission. We spoke with Fred about his book, Find the Helpers, which reaffirms the central importance of human connection and finding purpose amid tragedy.

Carlos Carrasco is a Panamanian-born actor, director, producer, with roles in Blood In Blood Out, Speed, Parker, The Fisher King, Turnover and HBO’s Looking and Insecure among others. His directorial and production work includes the award winning short film One, along with the shorts Lossed and Honesty, Pencil, Rose; and he directed the documentary short Art Galleries and Back Alleys, about the artist collective in Boyle Heights, Self Help Graphics. Carlos served as the executive director of HOLA, the New York Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors.

Carlos was kind enough to swing by our studio during a visit to Miami, where we sat down to discuss his unique immigrant experience, a hilarious run-in with the law while at Stevens College and the challenges and blessings of his chosen career.

Raised in a Mexican orphanage, the Mayans M.C., Shades of Blue and Savages co-star used to dream of having his own family one day. Now that he has it, Jaramillo says it’s his greatest source of pride. We discuss his immigrant journey, and how the theatre and the arts provided a sense of identity and the tools to overcome his childhood trauma.
