  • Goeie Mie: the mad mass poisoner of Leiden
    Nov 9 2023

Maria Catherina van der Linden-Swanenburg, also known as Goeie Mie, or 'Kind Mary', was a Dutch mass murderer who killed at least 27 people and was suspected of killing more than 90.

So how did she get away with murder for so long and what drove her to kill most of her family and an awful lot of her neighbours? And what is the delightful Dutch word for pin worms? Listen now!

In Search of Lost Crime focuses on historical murders, mostly in Europe. Please subscribe for more.

  • Deadly love triangle the downfall of Aviations Golden couple (part 3 of 3)
    Oct 31 2023

In the early morning of 21 April 1932, a gunshot rings out in a bungalow in the small Florida town of Coral Gables. The victim is a young man, one Haden Clarke and he appears to have committed suicide: he has left behind two letters for his housemates, aviation pioneers Jessie 'Chubbie' Miller and Captain Bill Lancaster.

But when the police find the diaries of Haden's roommate, Captain Bill, these shed a very different light on the case. The trial of captain Bill Lancaster would make history because of its scandalous details and highly dubious forensic science. it has adultery, a love triangle, crashing planes, human smuggling and the breakneck feats of history's greatest female aviation pioneers: Chubbie Miller.

  • Murder on the Dutch Herring Lugger (part 2 of 2)
    Sep 28 2023

    (Part 2 of 2)
    🐟
On  September 13th 1915 a Norwegian steamship comes across a drifting  herring lugger in the middle of the sea. The ship, from the Dutch port of Katwijk, has been dismantled, the crew is  singing hymns incessantly and on the deck they see... Pools of blood.
    🐟
The ship would go down in history as the Gekkenlogger, the Crazy Lugger, and in Katwijk they still prefer not to talk about it.
    🐟
What happened here? Was it religious madness or was there something else behind it? Something from the murky past...?
    🐟

My book - De moord op mr. Jacques Wijsman - is now on sale at all the big boys like bruna and bol.com, but of course also at your local bookshop! They can use all the support they can get. As can I!

  • The Lost Shepherd: the mysterious disappearance of José Maria Grimaldos
    Sep 12 2023

On 21 August 1910, shepherd José Maria Grimaldos sold a few sheep. Afterwards, it is was if the earth had simply gobbled him up... José Maria was gone without a trace. And he hadn't brought any of his meagre possessions. Very suspicious. The people in the village of Tresjuncos immediately start shouting that it was murder and they also have two convenient suspects in mind: Two other shepherds, from a nearbye village. What makes them so suspicious? They were different. Not a good thing to be in rural Spain in 1910, different. These two were…. Anarchists. Speaking up for the rights of the common people. Not keen on religion. So they must be guilty, right?

    Or were they….?

This case is still considered one of the biggest legal scandals in Spanish history.

    Sep 6 2023

This is part 3 of 3, please listen to part 1 & 2 first.

New Year's Eve 1921, 8.36pm. It is a cold, drizzly evening. at Hollandspoor station in The Hague, the train has just arrived from Amsterdam. A passenger about to board the first-class compartment says to the porter that there is a drunken bum on the floor. The porter shrugs his shoulders. It's New Year's Eve, of course there are drunk people. The porter decides to check it out. He stares into the compartment. There is a shape on the floor, a man, in an expensive wool coat. The man doesn't move. And then he sees the pool of blood....

The murder of this prominent Dutch lawyer was never solved and would keep Dutch society riveted to their newspapers for years. Was it a robbery gone wrong? A suicide? Or was it something to do with... the Dutch Royal family...?
