Introduction and Where it all Started

  • Resumen

  • Welcome

The concept of a safe workplace and how to achieve a safe workplace often gets skewed. Safety is so much more than rules, compliance, and regulations. It’s just a small piece of the overall picture. There are a lot of aspects to safety but in its foundation, safety comes from operational work. It's about understanding how front-line workers make decisions in the environment that's provided to them.

Why should you care about this?

If you work on the waterfront in any capacity, longshoremen, foreman, clerk, superintendent, ops managers, and yes, even my fellow safety managers, this is about you, your safety, and how you do your work. You should want to be a part of this because before you is an opportunity to share your story and how you safely do your work. Communicating and sharing your best practices provides an opportunity for many to learn. You can make a direct impact in a very positive way on the safety and work habits of this industry.

The idea that started it all

"I wish there was a place where we could talk openly about some of these issues we're seeing."

A combination of inspiration from my husband, industry friends, and life experiences has led me down this path. The more time I spend in safety, the more straightforward and applicable I want it to be for everyone. There are a lot of philosophical discussions about what safety is and how to achieve it. No matter how we define safety, safety is something that comes from operational work. People are kept safe, or they get hurt because of how the work is done.

My goal with this podcast is to have open and honest conversations with longshore men and women who do their work and who do their work well. This podcast is dedicated to understanding the process of work and how people keep themselves safe at work.

    Here's my ask

I'm only one small part of this equation. I'm not the knowledge, you are.

I'd like to conduct interviews and have guests on the podcast by jobs; crane and trans operators, top handlers, forklifts, mechanics, lashers, dock alofts, clerks, foremen, UTRs…. I know I’m missing jobs… that is in no way an all-inclusive list. We can do this podcast in person, and we can also record podcasts with the power of technology. We don't need to be in the same room to have these incredibly important conversations.

    Let's build something great together

If you are interested in contributing to Safety Talk on the Dock in any way, let me know. Simple things like spreading the word about this, letting me use a conference room to record, or even sponsoring and advertising on the podcast.

Yes, podcasts take money to produce, and Safety Talk on the Dock is no exception.

I'm all ears so hit me up.
