Is depression becoming the new normal?

  • Resumen

  • India is the most depressed country, followed by China and the US, according to the World Health Organization. Over 90 million Indians, or 7.5% of the country’s population of 1.3 billion, suffer from some form of mental disorder. However, according to a 2016 National Mental Health Survey, the prevalence could be much higher. The survey revealed that nearly 150 million Indians needed intervention while fewer than 30 million received it. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, WHO predicted that by 2020 roughly 20% of the population will suffer from mental illness. And now, during the pandemic the numbers may have risen, but there’s no official data as of yet, making it difficult to assess the magnitude of the mental healthcare burden in the country. In this episode’s Reporter's Diary*, we have Kamna Chhibber, head - mental health, Fortis Healthcare, Ishita Gupta, psychotherapist, Breakthrough Counselling, and Kunal Kala, psychiatrist, Circle of Life to discuss how well equipped is the mental healthcare system in India, especially during the pandemic.
