  • ADHD and Hypersensitivity (Part 2)
    Jun 17 2021

Please note: This episode will be even more valuable if you listen to it alongside your child so that great conversations can come out of it!

We are back for part 2 as we talk about the next step in the "Lafaya Way" method of becoming our best hypersensitive selves and RESPONDING in helpful ways. Please listen to (part 1) first, so that this episode will make even more sense! FURR is our acronym that we are are learning about and we previously talked about "finding our calm" (which means much more then just the phrase), and "understanding your real truth." This episode covers the first "R", which is to "Respond with your truest intentions." Lafaya does a great job giving examples of what this looks like in a child's world and how trusted adults can also come alongside and benefit from this strategy as well!

You can find Lafaya at www.lafayaway.com for more resources!

  • ADHD & Hypersensitivity (Part 3)
    Jun 24 2021

Here we are on the final part of our series on ADHD and hypersensitivity! Please listen back to the other two episodes if you haven't yet so that you can get the full gift of what Lafaya has to offer!!

So many of us experience hypersensitivity in all sorts of ways, yet we don't identify it for what it is and then it goes untreated. This is a team effort as we walk through the FURR steps alongside each other and learn to "find your calm", "understand your read truth", "respond to your true intentions", and today we are going to talk about "recognizing and celebrating the small steps of improvement in the process!"

There are a few friends on this episode who share what their hypersensitivities look like, so that you know that you're not alone and that many others need to "activate their FURR power" too!

You can find Lafaya at www.lafayaway.com for more resources, or she would love to have you email her questions or comments directly to lafayamft@gmail.com.

You can visit www.katelynmabry.com for additional resources or to set up a free coaching consultation to see if I would be a good fit for your child and family to work with.

  • I am an ADHD Warrior
    Jun 30 2021

I had a few avid listeners ask me to talk about being an ADHD warrior more! This is what sparked this episode. In this episode, you will be encouraged to identify the struggles that may need armor (tools and strategies) applied! This is something that was touched on in past episodes, but the most important piece of armor we can put on is actively thinking (metacognitive thought) about which areas of executive function are struggling the most and brainstorm armor that could be used to fight the battle in those areas! This is a episode meant for empowerment and encouragement to take this step before we move into applying more specific tools and strategies to our lives! This is where kids and trusted adults come together to lay a nice solid foundation to build on and grow from!

Send a message now to www.katelynmabry.com if you would like your story heard, strategies shared, or to give ideas for future episodes! This can be done through an interview, or you can submit a voice recording that I can tie into future episodes! Thank you for listening and have a great day!

  • Practice Makes Progress Not Perfect: ADHD and Perfectionism
    Jul 8 2021

"Practice makes perfect" has always been a phrase that drives me bonkers because it's just not true!!! NO ONE is or ever will be perfect! We all make mistakes and then are faced with the choice of how to respond to our mistakes!

Who else here struggles with perfectionism? You may even have it and you don't even realize it's a struggle! Often times kids are asked to "try harder" or told that they are making "careless mistakes" and over time, this can lead to becoming a perfectionist because of fear of failure or simply not wanting to make a mistake and upset someone. In this episode, you will hear from Patricia Sung, who has ADHD like we do and she is on a mission to help other mamas with ADHD through her podcast titled, "Motherhood in ADHD."

You may be wondering why she's on a podcast for kids with ADHD and the answer is simple...she was a teacher for 7 years to kids from grade 4th-7th and has a passion for sharing her own journey through childhood with ADHD. One of her biggest challenges has been battling being a perfectionist. She shares about the kind of armor she found helpful as an ADHD warrior and uses a great visual of becoming a scientist as we face new things!

You can find Patricia at www.patriciasung.com to learn more about the support she offers and resources she provides.

You can visit www.katelynmabry.com to message me about being a guest on this podcast, give topic ideas, or just share how this podcast has been helpful to you!

Thank you and have a great day!

  • We Are an ADHD Tribe
    Jul 14 2021

This episode is a shout out to all of my ADHD warriors listening to encourage and empower you to share what works well for your busy brain?! You will hear from our friend Bobby in this episode, who shares how he puts on the armor of a "positivity officer" to combat the negative thoughts in his head. There are so many internal struggles going on that we need to find tools and strategies for to grow in those areas. Even though we all have ADHD brains, they also all work differently, in their own special way. This is why, as a tribe, we need to work together to give one another armor to try on in different areas of struggle. Is it keeping your room clean? Is it remembering to do something? Is it finishing something you've started? Is it trying not to explode when something doesn't go your way? Is it making a decision or even making and maintaining friendships? So many areas that we can continually be working on! This is my call out to you to share your heart, your mind, and your creative ideas of what works well for you when faced with a struggle. It's also an opportunity to simply reach out and share your struggles so that you can release them, share your voice and in turn help others know they are not alone! In turn, you will feel more connected and together we can change the face of ADHD! Who is with me!?

Please email me directly at katelynmabry4@gmail.com to share an audio message or to set up an interview! You can also find more resources on my website at www.katelynmabry.com

I look forward to hearing from you soon! Have a great day!

  • What Is Stimming & Why Does My ADHD Brain Like That?!
    Jul 22 2021

The term "stimming" is short for "self-stimulatory behaviors" and is referring to the repetition of physical movements, sounds, words, or objects. EVERYONE, regardless of brain type, has a tendency to stim when put in a situation of fear, anxiety, or stems from boredom. It's more common for those of us with ADHD brains to present "stimming" more frequently and with more intensity because of the way that our busy minds are wired. In this episode, you will hear from neuropsychologist, Dr. Kristin Wegner, who will share both her expertise in stimming behavior and her personal experience with it growing up. She was recently diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and she now diagnoses and works with kids who have neurodivergent minds through her play method. She is the award winning offer of the children's book series titled, "Brody the Lion". In this book series, you will also meet characters within each book that has ADHD and other differences. Kristin is extremely gifted at speaking to children and you will love hearing all that she has to share! You can find her on Instagram @brody.the.lion or www.brodythelion.com.

There are different types of stimming behavior, including visual, verbal, auditory, taste & smell, tactile (touch), physical movement (vestibular: Repetitive action that has to do with balance (spinning, rocking) or proprioceptive: Spatial awareness and control *throwing items, pacing, jumping). The encouragement in this podcast is to become more self-aware of your "self-stimming" behavior, so you can identify if it's safe to continue doing and/or if it is something that needs to be investigated so that we aren't causing harm to yourself or others.

My friend Antonio, from Australia, shares his take on his own verbal stimming. I hope that hearing from a peer will help remind you that you're not alone and that we are an ADHD tribe here to support and encourage each other!
