Today, I would like to talk about vacation. In Korea, there is usually two different words each explaining vacation in different occasions. 먼저, 학교를 다니는 사람들의 vacation, 즉, for those who go to school, school vacation은 방학입니다. 방학은 한자어인데요 방은 놓을 방이고 학은 배울 학이예요. 즉, 방학이라는 것은 배움을 잠시 놓다는 건데요, 영어로 표현하면 방학은 learning break라고 볼 수 있겠습니다. 한편 회사를 다니거나 일을 하고 있는 사람들의 vacation은 '휴가'라고 부릅니다. 휴가도 한자어입니다. 휴는 쉴 휴고, 가는 '틈' 가라는 한자로 이루어져있어요. 즉, 쉬는 틈이라는 뜻입니다. 즉 한국말에서는 vacation이 방학 또는 휴가라고 부를 수 있는데요 방학은 학교를 다니는 사람에게 휴가는 일을 하고 있는 사람에게 적용할 수 있는 말입니다. [translation] Today, I'd like to talk about vacation. In Korean, there are typically two different terms used to describe vacation in different contexts. Firstly, for students, school vacation is called "방학" (bang-hak). 방학 is a Hanja word where "방" means to release or let go, and "학" means learning. So, 방학 can be understood as a break from learning. In English, 방학 can be translated as "learning break." On the other hand, for those who work or have jobs, vacation is called "휴가" (hyu-ga). 휴가 is also a Hanja word, where "휴" means to rest or take a break, and "가" means a gap or interval. Therefore, 휴가 means an interval for resting. In summary, in Korean, vacation can be referred to as 방학 or 휴가, where 방학 applies to students and 휴가 applies to working individuals. Today I will talk about Chicken Raddish pickle. 한국 드라마가 전세계적으로 유행하면서 한국식 치킨을 아는 사람들이 많아졌어요. 한국식 치킨은 Fried Chicken을 말하는데요 우리나라가 한국전쟁을 치루고, 주한미군이 한국에 주둔하면서 미국식 Fried Chicken이 한국에 전해졌습니다. 이것이 발전하고 한국 사람들의 입맛에 맞게 발전한 것이 바로 한국식 치킨입니다. 그런데, 한국에서 치킨을 시키면, 반드시 함께 오는 것이 있습니다. 바로 치킨 무인데요. 치킨 무는 한국 아니면 찾아보기 힘든 음식입니다. 무를 네모로 잘라서 식초와 사카린으로 절인 음식이예요. 아삭아삭하고, 새콤한 맛을 가지고 있어서 기름으로 튀긴 치킨의 느끼한 맛을 잘 중화해줍니다. 그리고 입맛을 좋게 하기도 합니다. 외국에서 비슷한 음식을 찾아본다면 코울슬로, 샐러드, 피클이 있는데 비슷한 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있어요. 그런데 한국인인 저로서는 치킨무의 아삭아삭함을 따라오는 음식은 없는 것 같습니다. [Translation]Today I will talk about Chicken Radish pickle. With the global popularity of Korean dramas, many people have become familiar with Korean-style fried chicken. Korean fried chicken, known as Fried Chicken, originated after the Korean War when American-style fried chicken was introduced to Korea due to the presence of US troops. It evolved and adapted to suit Korean tastes, becoming what we now know as Korean-style fried chicken. However, when you order chicken in Korea, there's always something that comes with it: chicken radish pickle. Chicken radish pickle is a food that's hard to find outside Korea. It's made by cutting radish into squares and pickling it with vinegar and saccharin. With its crisp texture and tangy flavor, it complements the greasy taste of fried chicken well, enhancing the overall dining experience. While similar foods like coleslaw, salad, and pickles can be found abroad, they don't quite match the crispiness of chicken radish pickle. As a Korean, I believe there's nothing quite like it.
