  • Lamar Reviews - "The Watcher" (Airdate 10/28/2022) This is a new Netflix series that hit number one on the watch list. People were raving about it to me and said I had to watch it. It is based on the real-life story of the Broaddus family, who bought their dream home, and were then threatened, spied on, and finely driven out of their house, by a mysterious stalker who called themselves The Watcher.   Dean and Nora Brannock, played by Bobby Cannavale and Naomi Watts, and their two children find their dream home in a Ney Jersey Hamlet, but they can’t afford it. Dean cashes out all their savings, and retirement to make the down payment. He feels he can take the risk because he is about to be made partner in his firm. Anybody want to guess how that is going to turn out? No sooner do they move in does Dean tear out the entire kitchen to remodel it because his famous red sauce would stain the counter tops. What? Wait this man just cashed out their entire savings, their retirement, and possibly drugged his grandmother and sold one of her kidneys, to buy a their “dream home” and before they get moved in, is remodeling the kitchen? I’ve watched enough HGTV to know, this ain’t a dream home, it’s a fixer upper. All because of his red sauce stain? How about you buy some really good paper towels? Not to mention, where do you get the money for the remodel? I’m ready to quit this show and I’m only 37 minutes in.   Then they get the note from “The Watcher” saying they are being watched, and that they should give the house “what it wants” does it want a fresh coat of paint, or the immortal souls of your children? Not only are they getting these threatening letters, they are surrounded by kooky neighbors. Margo Martindale and Richard Kind play Maureen and Mitch, the most offensive couple you could have living next door. Pearl, the neighbor historian who talks to trees, is played by Mia Farrow. The police detective, played by Christopher McDonald is absolutely no help, and Jennifer Coolidge, as Karen, the Real Estate agent from hell will keep you from ever wanting to buy or sell a house. She actually steals the series, nobody could have played her character better.    There are 7 episodes 52 minutes long, Rated TV-MA   Just like all “based on a true story” shows, this series is 10% what really happened and 90% fluff. This fluff includes evil spirits, murder, drugs, and the kitchen sink, Premier Copper Farmhouse, with apron, no less. It is the same story told a different way. You are in a house that is haunted, possessed, built over an ancient grave yard, next door to a poultry processing plant, or just bad neighbors, and you refuse to be run out of your house! OK, great, quit your bitching and stay there, nobody cares.   I wanted to quit, but Carla and I had to know who was writing the letters. I almost skipped from episode 3 to 7 to get it over with, but I didn’t. Wished I had. I’m not going as far as saying it has a terrible ending, because I don’t want anybody to miss a series they might enjoy. I want to allow you to judge for yourself.
