    During this episode, we explore the mega drivers behind trends. We also review some of the disruptors and how tourism futures are shaped by these developments. We will consider if it's possible to be confident about our predictions about the future and learn how to conduct scenario planning.

  • Futures & Foresight Basics: Do we have agency?

    In this first episode of Season 2, we discuss how to use futures thinking and foresight in both our personal lives and a professional capacity.

    This series is co-hosted by Birthe Menke, a PhD fellow in sustainable tourism development and co-design at the University of Southern Denmark. Birthe is studying how tourism professionals engage with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

    In this episode, we're joined by Peter Bishop, Founder and Executive Director of Teach the Future. Peter previously directed the Master's degree in Foresight at the University of Houston.

    During this episode, we explain the basics of futures thinking and foresight, why it is important to use these approaches and how they differ from developing strategies. We talk about how the world is constantly changing and the need to stop relying on predictive mindsets. Instead, we show the value of evaluating different scenarios and considering alternative futures. We discuss whether we have agency and influence over our future and the significance of being open to new ideas, learning through investigating different questions and using participatory approaches to design a better future.

    We'll be launching this series together with Birka Valentin, an independent sustainability consultant, formerly Senior Sustainability Specialist heading up the INSTO programme at UNWTO and now highly specialised in helping destinations navigate the complexity of data in meeting their sustainability goals.

    In this episode, we're joined by Anna Scutari from the Munich University of Applied Sciences, where she is a Professor for Empirical Research. Anna is also working at eurac research in Tyrol, where she is leading an observatory for Sustainable Tourism, measuring the impact of tourism at a regional level in Italy, trying to understand the kind of transformation that can be created.

    In this first series, hosted in partnership with our expert Birka Valentin, we'll be exploring the relationship between data and sustainability and why digital transformation and the sustainable transformation need to go hand-in-hand if we're to succeed in our mission to make tourism more sustainable as an industry.
