  • Flexible Learning for All: The Impact of HyFlex Instruction on Student Achievement
    Jul 12 2024

On Let's Talk Ed this week, we Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde speak with friend of the show and English professor Kirby Lund, as we continue exploring ways to enhance student success and keep the college promise. The topic of this week is: upending the way we have done education to ensure student access and success.

Segment 1: "Re-inventing Gateway Courses: Corequisite Remediation Works”. In the first video, we discuss how re-inventing gateway courses for better student outcomes goes through corequisite remediation removes obstacles, increases success rates, and speeds up the completion of credentials.

Segment 2: "How Open Educational Resources Empower and Enhance Student Success”. In the second segment, Kirby shares his experience developing an Open Educational Resource (OER) for English Composition students (https://professorlund.wordpress.com/). Learn how OER can be continuously enhanced and adapted to meet student needs and tailored to individual cohorts. Such content reduces the cost of education for students while enhancing access and outcomes.

Segment 3: "Flexible Learning for All: The Impact of HyFlex Instruction on Student Achievement”. In the final episode, we explore the impact of HyFlex instruction, a highly flexible educational modality that allows students to attend classes remotely in real-time or review materials asynchronously, ensuring accessibility and flexibility for all learners. When we think about the main reasons why students fail to complete college education, it is mostly about life and/or work coming in the way. So, an education that wraps around the requirements of life and provides the tools for success is a key to keeping the college promise.

  • Building Resilience: Creating a Supportive and Thriving College Environment
    Jul 5 2024

This week on Let's Talk Ed, Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde host Dr. Phil Thorsen and Ms. Marcia Thorsen, both experienced psychology practitioners, to discuss the development of a comprehensive mental health toolkit for students. Phil is a professor of Psychology, and Marcia is a practicing licensed therapist. Building on our previous series exploring the general impact of mental health in college, this series dives deeper into practical solutions and strategies. This series is a continuation of our summer 2024 focus on keeping the college promise for learners.

Segment 1: "Mental Health Challenges in Higher Education: Understanding the Stressors”. In this first segment, we describe the various stressors faced by students in higher education. We explore the concept of a toxic environment and its impact on mental health. We talk about how the mental health of faculty and staff is integral to college success, in addition to the mental health of learners. “Doing more with less” comes back as a major cause of toxic college environments.

Segment 2: "Effective Interventions: Tools and Strategies for Mental Health Support in College" The second segment presents interventions that work in higher education settings. We discuss the importance of empathy, taking the other person's perspective, and implementing supportive strategies. The tone is set at the very top of the institution, and focuses on the growth and development of all. A healthy environment is critical for student success and relies on the implementation of established and successful tools.

Segment 3: "Building Resilience: Creating a Supportive and Thriving College Environment”. In this final segment, we focus on fostering a Growth Mindset, and explore the concepts of Grit, Emotional Intelligence, and Anti-Fragility. These concepts are key to building resilience in college environments and supporting the students' overall well-being and success.

  • Providing Better Information: Key to Unlocking Access and Supporting Success
    Jun 28 2024

On Let's Talk Ed this week, we, Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde, tackle the concern that the poor accessibility and clarity of information in higher education can negatively impact college access and student success. In this three-part series, we explore how poor access to information can prevent learners from reaching their college goals, and ultimately, the College Promise.

In segment 1 called"A Black Box: How Poor Accessibility to Information Blocks College Opportunities", we discuss the perceived obstacles students face due to inaccessible information, and how this barrier can significantly hinder their college opportunities. The information may be hidden in massive websites and thick catalog. Moreover, the verbiage used may be too technical, thus foreign to those outside of higher education.

In segment 2 entitled "Through Their Eyes: Understanding College Information Through Student Perspectives”, we shift focus to the student perspective, examining how information is often designed by administrators and for administrators, making it difficult for students to navigate and understand. Perhaps it is time to “walk a mile in students’ shoes” when it comes to the type of information and where it is made available.

Finally, in segment 3 titled"Providing Better Information: Key to Unlocking Access and Supporting Success", we provide actionable solutions on how to improve information accessibility, ensuring that students have clear, understandable, and easily accessible information to support their educational journey. We believe that it is time for colleges to address students in a language that makes sense to those learners, using information tools used by them, and making everything easily accessible.
