Brett McMurphy from Action Network reports that the Big Ten and SEC are not interested in adding Florida State and Clemson. On FSU, his sources say it doesn’t make financial sense, those conference are done expanding for now, and they consider Florida State to be a “disruptive partner.” According to the report, the SEC or Big Ten would only add the Seminoles in the event of the ACC completely falling apart, making them free agents.

Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs wonder if McMurphy’s sources have reason to not be entirely truthful about the situation. Perhaps they are downplaying FSU as part of a negotiating ploy or dismissing them in order to avoid tampering charges. If the report is fully true, this would be very bad news for the Seminoles. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was asked at his conference media days if he is monitoring the legal situations with Florida State and Clemson. Sankey shot down the possibility of further expansion, saying his league is at 16 teams today and will be at 16 tomorrow. He added that he does not want to entangle the SEC in any litigation. Is Sankey playing chess, or do we take his words at face value? Multiple reports in recent months have indicated that the SEC is not planning on expanding further after adding Oklahoma and Texas.

The reports linking FSU and Clemson to the Big 12 might have legs, afterall. Arizona insider Jason Scheer reported on his X account that, “According to sources, there is an internal belief in the Big 12 that Florida State and Clemson are likely to join the conference within the next year or so.” If the Big 12 can use private equity infusions and creative advertising revenue to pay them significantly more than the ACC, perhaps this could become a viable option.
