The feverishly beloved and brilliant Poh Ling Yeow is a multi-talented artist known for her diverse creative pursuits - including painting, cooking, and television presenting. Since her breakthrough on MasterChef Australia, Poh has emerged as a prominent figure in the Australian culinary landscape. She's also experienced - particularly across the last year - an immense amount of loss and grief. As someone keen to unpack what it means to mourn and the specific things it teaches us, she's fronting up with gusto to build her dream Funeral and interrogate what it is to love and let go...in her own beautifully unique way.

CELEBRATING AIDAN FENNESSY

Aidan Fennessy was an Australian playwright, stage director and actor, known for his work with the Melbourne Theatre Company, where he was at one time associate director. A brilliant and revered playwright, his writing career began in the 1990’s, and took off with National Interest in 2012, a critically acclaimed dramatisation of the story of the Balibo Five murdered journalists – the youngest of whom was his cousin Tony.

Aidan died of cancer in September 2020, during the Melbourne lockdowns.

Celebrating Aidan is his partner and mother of his two children, the writer Nova Weetman. Nova has written for TV and is the author of many middle grade and young adult novels. The Secrets We Keep was shortlisted for the Readings Children’s Book Prize, the Speech Pathology Book of the Year Awards and the ABIA Awards. The sequel, The Secrets We Share, was a 2018 CBCA Notable Book and won the KROC Kids Reading Oz Choice Awards, NT – Best Fiction for Years 7 to 9. It was also shortlisted for the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards. Nova’s middle grade novel Sick Bay was a CBCA Notable Book and shortlisted for the ABIA Awards. In 2022, The Edge of Thirteen won the ABIAs Small Publishers' Children's Book of the Year and was a CBCA Notable Book: Younger Readers. In 2023, The Jammer was shortlisted for the ABIAs Book of the Year for Older Children.

LA PETITE MORT: ANDREA GOLDSMITH IS GOING TO DIE

Writers obsessed with the themes of death and mortality often find comfort in the words of fellow artists interrogating same. What is it that they're seeking in the musings of those who turn to face the Reaper? What does it tell them not only about their own creative practice, but life itself?

Andrea Goldsmith is an award-winning novelist and occasional essayist. Death has featured in most of her 9 novels; indeed, in the forthcoming, The Buried Life, the main character is a sociologist of death. Her fascination with death may be nothing more than her flexing muscles at the Grim Reaper, though she insists that it’s the mystery of death and the fear that it commonly inspires that attracts her - as well as the poetry and the two thousand plus requiems.

BEN QUILTY IS GOING TO DIE

Australian artist Ben Quilty has always been an outspoken human - passionate about art, social justice, and the general messy business of Being Human. But as someone who has had a front-row seat to death and mortality - not just through his work, but also through his activism - how does he feel about planning his own Funeral? What does he wish he'd said and refrained from saying? This is an earnest Dream Funeral from one of the country's most reflective and creative minds.

Ben Quilty is a contemporary Australian artist whose thickly painted landscapes and portraits have garnered international acclaim. Working in a style that remains both highly expressive and naturalistic, Quilty aims to delve into the emotional qualities of places and people through his gestural application of paint. Though remains distinctive in Quilty’s vivid use of spectral color. Quilty studied at Sydney College of the Arts and the University of Western Sydney. In 2011, he notably worked as an official war artist for the Australian Defense force stationed in Afghanistan, where he depicted the daily life and struggles of the soldiers through quickly executed sketches and paintings. Quilty’s works are in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, the National Gallery of Art in Canberra, and the University of Queensland Art Museum in Brisbane, among others. The artist lives and works in Robertson, Australia.

Nikita Chawla was a beautiful, kind-hearted, gentle, energetic and ambitious young woman with a passion for performing arts and dance. Her life was taken in a brutal act of domestic violence perpetrated on 9 January 2015. She was 23 years old.

Celebrating Niki is her brother Tarang Chawla - a speaker, writer and founder of Not One More Niki, working to end violence against women. He is a gender equality, human rights and mental health advocate who was named a Young Australian of the Year Finalist and listed as one of Australia’s Top 40 Under 40 Asian Australians.
