  • Episode 115 - Enhancing Mobility: The Science Behind Exoband with Dr. Semplicini
    Jul 24 2024

I always love speaking to people who are working to improve the lives of people living with chronic health conditions. So I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Claudio Semplicini, an Italian doctor who co-created Exoband, a device aimed at assisting individuals with walking difficulties due to various neurological conditions.

Exoband is a lightweight, easy-to-use device that stores and releases energy during the hip extension and flexion phases to aid walking. The device has been tested by over 1000 users worldwide and has shown effectiveness in a high proportion of patients with various conditions.

Dr. Semplicini shared his journey into neurology, highlighting the complexity and importance of the brain and the wide range of diseases neurology covers, from migraines to rare genetic disorders.

During the interview, we delved into the benefits of Exoband for patients with spinal cord impairment, lower limb weakness, balance issues, and gait limitations due to fatigue. Dr. Semplicini emphasized the potential of the device to improve mobility and quality of life for individuals with walking difficulties.

  • Episode 114 - Love, Support, and MS: A Conversation with Cathy and Gary Chester
    Jul 10 2024

I'm delighted to present my recent chat with my almost-namesake Cathy Chester and her husband Gary. Cathy and Gary began dating in 1985, the year before Cathy's diagnosis, which means that at the time of recording they have been together for nearly 40 years - incredible!

Cathy and Gary share valuable insights into the importance of communication and mutual respect in maintaining a happy and successful marriage, especially when facing the challenges of MS. They also emphasized the importance of empathy and understanding in their relationship. They acknowledge each other's needs and emotions, whether it's taking a break for self-care or providing support during difficult times.

As an award-winning writer and certified health advocate, Cathy is dedicated to helping other MSers feel less lonely, isolated and overwhelmed than she did when she was diagnosed. She is passionate about helping those with MS feel better about themselves and the world around them.

It was such an honor to be able to interview and meet them both. I hope that you'll be able to feel the love and support they give to each other.

  • Episode 111 - The Power of Habits in Transforming Autoimmune Health with Amy Behimer
    May 29 2024

Habits play a crucial role in shaping our health and well-being, as I learned when I spent time with the incredible Amy Behimer. As well as having MS, Amy is a podcaster, a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, and a Doctor of Pharmacy.

Amy emphasizes the importance of habits in improving our overall health and how changing habits can lead to positive outcomes in our lives. She also introduces the concept of "disease-modifying habits" (DMHs) that focus on six key areas: mindset, food, movement, rest and relaxation, connection, and good stresses.

As you'll hear, habits are not just about the actions we take but also about how we tend to think and feel. By addressing these underlying aspects of habits, we can make significant changes in our lives. Amy mentions that habits have been proven to benefit our bodies, and by understanding the science behind habits, individuals can make informed decisions to improve their health.

We also explore the ripple effect of habits, highlighting how the habits we cultivate today can be passed down through generations, creating a cycle of well-being.

  • Episode 110 - Innovative Solutions for Chronic Conditions: Exploring BeWell's Adaptive Clothing Line
    May 15 2024

In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Amanda Phillips, the director and creator of BeWell, a company dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autoimmune diseases through thoughtfully designed apparel and products.

As you'll hear, Amanda's story began with her struggle to manage Crohn's disease during long car rides, leading her to devise a makeshift emergency toilet using an ice cream bucket. This experience sparked her creativity and led to the development of the IV hoodie, designed to provide warmth and easy access for infusion treatments. In our conversation, we also touch on the challenges of starting and running a business, especially in the niche market of adaptive clothing.

Amanda's commitment to the community is evident in her approach to product development, actively seeking feedback through a VIP Facebook group to ensure that the products meet the needs of her customers. She also highlighted upcoming products and the introduction of a patent-pending design aimed at providing even more versatility for medical access.

This episode not only sheds light on the unique challenges faced by those with autoimmune diseases but also highlights how innovation and entrepreneurship can lead to practical solutions that enhance daily living. Amanda's story is a testament to the power of personal experience in driving change and creating products that offer comfort, dignity, and functionality to those who need them most.

  • Episode 109 - Cadense: A Revolutionary Solution for Foot Drop and Mobility Issues
    May 1 2024

Foot drop - a difficulty in lifting the front part of the foot - is one of the most common issues I see with the people I work with. It can be caused by muscle weakness caused by muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy or motor neurone disease, or damage to the brain or spinal cord caused by a stroke, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis.

There are many ways to manage foot drop - ranging from physiotherapy to electrical nerve stimulation - but my guest today is here to present what his company describes as the world's first truly adaptive shoes.

Dr. Tyler Susco of Cadense shares his journey from being an engineer to developing a split treadmill for gait therapy at MIT, which eventually led to the creation of an innovative shoe. The shoe features a variable friction surface that helps users move more comfortably and confidently.

The shoe underwent a pilot study, where participants experienced significant improvements in their gait mechanics and overall mobility. Feedback from beta testers, including individuals with MS and recovering from strokes, was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing newfound confidence and mobility. The shoe's impact on users' lives inspired Dr. Susco and his team to continue their work.

Discover the story behind this revolutionary shoe designed to help individuals with foot problems due to stroke, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, and more. Listen to the episode for insights into the creation process and the impact on mobility, and learn about the research, trials, and get a glimpse into the future of mobility aids.
