  • In 1969, about a year removed from the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., students at Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina started protesting after a black student was barred from the ballot in the race for student council president. Unrest broke out on campus. Eventually, the protests made their way to North Carolina A&T State University campus and gunshots rang out. The National Guard was called to campus. Gunfire was exchanged between law enforcement and students, and in the early morning hours, a sophomore by the name of Willie Grimes was shot and killed. His murder remains unsolved. This is the story of what’s become known as the greatest mystery in the history of North Carolina A&T.

    The building at the "center of everything" no longer stands. Despite continuing to exist after being pierced by dozens of bullets, it was torn down by choice. About four years later, the university where Willie Grimes was killed honored him with what he wasn't able to achieve. Following his death, the state prescribed a series of recommendations to prevent similar events from happening again. They didn't work. Today, the questions surrounding his death, namely if his "sacrifice" was worth it, and who perpetrated it, remain.

    55 years ago, tensions boiled over on the campus of Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, after a black student was barred from the ballot in the race for student council president. Looking for support, the Dudley students went to nearby North Carolina A&T State University, which has a rich history of fighting for social change. Within days, violence erupted on the university’s campus and the military was called in. Shots were exchanged between students and law enforcement, and at the height of the chaos, a sophomore student was killed. His murder is still unsolved. This is the story of what became known as The Greensboro Uprising.
