The Hammond Circus Train Wreck, one of the worst train wrecks in U.S. history, occurred on June 22, 1918, leaving many lives taken and injured. The accident happened at about 4:30 am near Hammond, Indiana, when a train engineer fell asleep at the controls causing a southbound Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Railroad express to collide with the rear of a circus train carts carrying employees, family, and performers of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus.
