  • The Death of Henry VIII
    Jul 15 2024

On 28 January 1547, King Henry VIII died at the age of 55. Just hours before his passing, his last will and testament had been read, stamped, and sealed. Historians have disagreed ever since about its authenticity and validity, and the circumstances of its creation, making Henry's will one of English history's most contested documents.

In this episode of Not Just the Tudors, first released in January 2022, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb offers her own illuminating interpretation of the aftermath of Henry VIII's death, the mystery of his will and how misplaced trust can undermine the best-laid plans of a powerful monarch.

Presented by Professor Susannah Lipscomb. The researcher is Alice Smith, audio editor Ella Blaxill and the producer is Rob Weinberg. The senior producer is Anne-Marie Luff.

Fascinating, disturbing, and even funny

This was a great interview that highlighted some interesting and needed research into non-mainstream historical sexuality. The researcher was clear, knowledgeable, and even witty, while never ignoring the tragedy of the subject. The interviewer, as always, was knowledgeable and well-prepared.

Brainy but juicy and accessible

This was quite the fun ride through the complexities of Catherine Parr and her time!

Always fascinating

This is a great podcast: a personable host, interesting topics, and a dry dash of humor. Susannah Lipscomb always prepares for each episode, asks interesting questions, and keeps the interviews lively without making them light on academics. The range of topics is startling while still staying linked to the late 15th, 16th and early 17th centuries and providing wonderful period context. No matter which part of the world the podcast travels to, its home base is the Tudors, with behind-the-hype/myth discussions of the people “everyone knows.” It’s definitely my favorite podcast!
