Omamas: Roma women fighting generational poverty in Slovakia

  • Resumen

  • In this episode of Meanings of Cohesion we travel to Slovakia. The first six years of a person's life are crucial for neurodevelopment. Growing up in poverty can negatively impact your health, behaviour and future. Such is the case for Roma children living in segregated settlements in Slovakia, who are already far behind their peers before they even enter the educational system - where they subsequently face discrimination. Women from Roma communities, so-called "omamas", are helping Roma parents to change this.

Also in this podcast: an interview with Quentin Ariès, editor in chief of Babel International NGO.
