  • Ep. 11: Improvisation as community care - with Nick Fagnilli
    Jul 16 2024

Our first guest interview! Please welcome composer Nick Fagnilli to the pod to talk about embodiment, music education, living composers, the art of improvisation, and so much more.

Nicholas Fagnilli is a composer, teacher, and performer based in Pittsburgh, PA. Nicholas received his Composition degree from Ithaca College, and is currently enrolled in the Masters of Music Education program at Carnegie Mellon University. Nick believes that creating and improvising freely should be a normal part of anyone’s musical experience. His framework of creating and teaching is based on the natural characteristics of sound and harnessing these in one’s own unique way. His music embraces the multiplicities of life and draws from a wide variety of processes and styles. His teaching and his practice as a composer and musician have developed a symbiotic relationship, and it is through this relationship that Nick seeks to reach a new understanding of what music means and what purpose it serves in today’s ever-changing world. Through his music, he seeks to discover what new stories and feelings can be evoked by releasing our previous associations of harmony and structure.

  • Ep. 7: How to sell your art as an anti-capitalist
    Jun 18 2024

In this episode, host Zoe Sorrell explores how to be a thriving artist who sells products and services while maintaining anticapitalist values.

Zoe posits that sales under capitalism are uniquely violent because they rely on endless accumulation and the promise of a New Way of Being. But by grounding in enoughness and transparency, artists can lead the way in crafting more humanized ways of buying and selling.

Journal prompts for exploring this topic further:

    • How do/will you know when you have enough?
    • What does enoughness feel like in your body?
    • What do you think enoughness looks like for you in your creative work?
    • Once you have adequate resources to live comfortably, how can you then invest in co-creating the more beautiful world you believe in?
    • Have you ever been tempted to sell your art with the false promise of a new way of being? Have you ever been tempted to exploit your audience’s pain points, or to create a false sense of urgency?
    • Do you believe that your art is worthy without being attached to a greater story?
    • What are some examples of sales (where you were either the buyer or seller) that felt really delicious and warm and humanized? Where you felt trusted as the best authority of your own experience? Where you felt truly joyful about buying or selling? Where there was no post-sale remorse? What was it about that sale that made it feel so wonderful?
