  • 181: Revisiting Disability Support Services
    Dec 2 2021

Research tells us that up to 20% of students in higher education report having a disability. At Ivy Tech, while only about 3% of our students report a disability to the office of Disability Support Services, our recent climate survey revealed that more than 30% of students report having a disability.

Ivy Tech has a dedicated office and staff to ensure that these students receive the resources and assistance they need to help them be successful in their educational journey. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 ensure equal access for students with disabilities in our educational setting. Today we will be talking beyond basic compliance, and focusing on how we can all better support students with disabilities at the College.

    Thanks to this week’s guests:

    • Dr. Carey Treager, Assistant Vice President for Student Advocacy
    • Jaime Frey, Director of Disability Support Services, Terre Haute
    • Sandra Senatore-Roberts, Director of Disability Support Services, South Bend
    • Sarah Martin, Student Resources Coordinator, Columbus

What can you do after listening to this week’s episode? Identify a way or ways in your classroom or office that you can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for students with disabilities. Implement the strategy you have identified.  Be sure to reach out to the DSS lead on your campus for additional information and support as questions arise.

  • 180: New Organizational Development Team
    Nov 25 2021

Over the last couple of years, the strategy and process improvement team has expanded to include operations, data analytics, and event planning.  With the recent addition of Talent Development and a new focus on change management, the team took a step back to take a holistic view of their strengths and services they provide to the College.

The team found that the term Organizational Development more appropriately defined the new structure and purpose.  With this new structure, the team decided to create a mission statement that reads, “Organizational Development serves campuses and the college with a creative and collaborative spirit. We leverage data and a willingness to adapt in areas of planning, talent development, facilitation, and coaching to produce analytical and effective outcomes with meaning.”

    • Jen Fisher – Assistant Vice President for Strategy and Innovation
    • Jeff Kraft – Assistant Vice President for Continuous Improvement
    • Cory Vought – Executive Director of Strategic Analytics

  • 179: First Generation Celebrations
    Nov 19 2021

Today I am coming to you live from the First-Generation Celebration at our Indianapolis Campus.

National First-Generation College Celebration is recognized at colleges across the country during the week of November 8. Join Ivy Tech on many campuses in recognizing the achievements of our First-Generation College students and increase your awareness of how we can best support their needs.

We will be hearing from students, staff, and faculty who are celebrating First-Generation students on the Indianapolis campus - for the third annual week of celebrations. It is our hope that through increased awareness and a greater focus on the resiliency and value First-Generation students bring to the college, we can continue to advocate for change that helps not only support the needs of First-Generation students but for all students at Ivy Tech.

Today I am joined by Josh VanBibber, Director of TRIO Student Support Services and one of the many responsible for today’s event. Josh, let’s get some students, staff, and faculty to join in on today’s podcast fun!

  • 178: Academic Freedom Online
    Nov 11 2021
In this unique conversation, Melissa Speck and Christine Peterson, faculty leads for IvyOnline, and I sit down to discuss IvyOnline, statewide courses, and academic freedom. It was a fun and challenging conversation as we tackle concepts that are nuanced and subtle.

To view Ivy Tech’s academic freedom statement, visit www.ivytech.edu/policies. The statement is at the top of the policy manual. Please continue to ask great questions about academic freedom to your statewide faculty leads and others. We’d love to reprise this episode again with more questions and more voices in the conversation.

  • 177: Enrollment Goal 2 Refresh
    Nov 4 2021

Today we’ll be talking about Goal 2 updates to our Strategic Plan. This goal centers on recruitment and enrollment.

Last Fall, we began the process of refreshing Goal 2 strategies and metrics. Statewide listening sessions were conducted and a cross-functional team of campus and systems employees worked together to create an updated plan.

In July, campuses were given their new Goal 2 metrics. These new goals were based on the recruitable population of each campus’ service area and have been broken down to the county level. Recruitable population is defined as high school students in grades 10-12 and population ages 18-64 with a high school diploma or some college, but no degree.

A primary intention of the Goal 2 refresh was to allow more campus autonomy, rather than Systems Office enrollment requirements by student category. This has allowed campuses to create the most impactful strategy for your service area.

    Thanks to this week’s guests:

    • Sue Ellspermann, President, Ivy Tech Community College
    • Chris Lowery, Senior Vice President for Workforce Alignment, Systems Office
    • Jo Nahod-Carlin, Vice President for Recruitment & Enrollment Management, Systems Office
    • Stacy Townsley, Vice President for Adult Strategy and Statewide Partnerships, Systems Office
    • Rebecca Rahschulte, Vice President for K-14 Initiatives and Statewide Partnerships, Systems Office

Everyone inside the Ivy Tech faculty and staff community has access to the enrollment dashboard. You can access it through IvyAnalytics/Tableau at https://us-east-1.online.tableau.com/#/site/ivytechcommunitycollege/views/Goal2EnrollmentOpportunitiesv2DRAFT/EnrollmentOpportunities. If you have any trouble accessing that, please submit a Help Ticket through MyIvy.
