  • Keith Ross: King Fisher Walks
    Feb 12 2022

Last year, Rachel Mills chatted to local nature expert Keith Ross about filming for BBC’s Winterwatch, kingfisher walks around the harbour and how to tell the difference between the birds of prey you spot in Thanet. Charming, chatty and knowledgeable, Keith shares his thoughts about how nature has adapted to living with humans and what we can do to help it thrive. When we spoke it was early winter and he was worried about Ramsgate’s resident female kingfisher, but the good news is that she is back for the over winter season – to book a kingfisher walk get in touch with Keith @ramsgatebirds

  • Foraging with Jack Hancock

If you like great food and you’re interested in foraging, listen in as Rachel Mills walks our east Kent coastline with Jack Hancock, head chef at Ramsgate’s newest pop-up restaurant, Hearth. Jack trained under top chefs in Manchester and London (in a Michelin-starred restaurant, no less) and this is his first solo gig.

The two of them chat about sustainable foraging and how to identify and harvest the wild foods we have here in Ramsgate – and how the seasons and what Jack gathers informs the three-course menu at his restaurant (you’ll never leave home without scissors and Tupperware again). Hearth is open Tuesday to Saturday evenings at the Empire Room on Nelson Crescent until the end of December.

  • Wild Swimming (Sarah Tomczak)
    Dec 14 2021

If the idea of going for a beach swim in January (in nothing but a swimsuit) fills you with dread, you’ll probably find it hard to believe that to a great deal of people jumping in the Ramsgate waters, it’s actually relaxing. As counter-intuitive as it may sound, the cold water experience is known to soothe muscle aches, relieve depression/stress and even strengthen the immune system. But beyond the health benefits, it’s an incredible way to connect with Nature - allowing yourself to see the world from a different perspective.

Rachel Mills talks to Sarah Tomczak about her journey and experience with cold water swimming. Recorded a few months ago (when the waters were colder), we listen in as Rachel tentatively dips in to the water for a swim with Sarah. Completely invigorated, the two then head back to the Ramsgate Radio studio for a warm cuppa and a good chat.

For those of you familiar with Sarah Tomczak, you’ll know that she’s the editor of Red Magazine - in this episode of Over Here we discuss Sarah’s journey to the Kent coast, body confidence, the balance between career and family life, and how swimming can help reconnect you with creativity.
