  • Season 9, Episode 46: Henry Burris recaps a Hall of Fame career
    Jul 18 2024

Temple and CFL Hall of Famer Henry Burris joined us on The Scoop this week to share memories from his career on North Broad Street as a record-setting quarterback out of Spiro, Oklahoma.

Burris, who recently returned to his alma mater back in May to serve as the Klein College of Media and Communication’s commencement speaker at the Liacouras Center, also established himself as a television personality in Canada on CTV Morning Live and TSN and said he used his Temple education to feel comfortable being on camera as a host and analyst.

On the field, Burris passed for 7,495 yards and 49 touchdowns against some great competition in the Big East from 1993 to 1996 and earned his way into the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent and saw stints with the Green Bay Packers, where he backed up Brett Favre and Doug Pederson. The relationship he forged with Pederson allowed him to land a spot on his Jacksonville Jaguars staff in 2022 as an offensive quality control coach. This season, he'll be the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Florida A&M.

In the CFL, Burris became a three-time Grey Cup champion, a two-time Grey Cup MVP and a two-time recipient of the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award -- and it all started with a tryout that had Burris throwing to guys off the street wearing slacks and Stacy Adams dress shoes.

Burris shared that story and many more on this week’s podcast, which also includes some football and basketball recruiting updates and information on how you can vote in the OwlScoop Summertime Madness food bracket championship between Richie’s and Maxi’s.

Participants in Wednesday’s outing can meet Berry and face off against him in a Beat the Pro game of arcade pop-a-shot.

As a guest on this week’s episode of The Scoop, Berry talked about his work with the Lupus Foundation of America, his freshman season at Temple, and why he thinks the Owls are poised to play some meaningful basketball next March.

Temple’s Board of Trustees unanimously appointed John Fry as the university’s 15th president Wednesday morning, and we talked on this week’s episode of The Scoop about how Drexel’s former president might impact the Owls’ athletic programs.

And in the mailbag, OwlScoop editors John DiCarlo and Kyle Gauss answered questions about how Adam Fisher and his staff might use their last available scholarship for the 2024 class and if the Owls have a good enough roster to potentially earn an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

Temple men’s basketball fans can enjoy the first part of our 1-on-1 interview with Owls forward Steve Settle, who explained how he and his teammates turned around their season in the span of five games to get to the brink of a conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth.

If you’re curious about what the latest House v. NCAA settlement will mean for a program like Temple, Philadelphia lawyer Andrew Hope joined us on The Scoop again to lend his legal perspective to the issue and explained while it may not be such a bad thing for the Owls and the landscape of college athletics.

And fans of yesterday and today can tune in for the unveiling of our first Summertime Madness bracket that pits former and current Temple food spots against each other in tournament matchups that will be decided by you – the listeners and voters – and the OwlScoop staff. Where do pizza places like Eddie's, Fames and Philly Style check in? Remember the place on campus back in the 90s on Broad Street that served Chines food and donuts? It made the field, too.
