On the fateful day, Paandu and Maadree went for a walk in the forest. Maadree was looking very beautiful. Paandu yielded to the temptation and tried to establish sexual relations with her. Due to the curse of Muni, Paandu died instantly. His wives, Kuntee and Maadree, were shocked and sad. Both wanted to get into fire and follow in the footsteps of Paandu. The rishis, who were present there, advised the two against such a step asking them to instead take care of the five sons. Kuntee accepted their advice. Maadree was determined to die. She handed over her two sons to Kuntee and said her parting words to all present. The same day, Paandu was cremated and Maadree sacrificed her life in the same fire.
