    Feb 5 2024

The Piper Carter Podcast Episode #177 - Beyond the Beats: The Environmental Impact of Hip Hop Culture

Hip hop, a cultural movement that has transcended boundaries and captivated millions around the world. But have you ever wondered about its environmental impact beyond the beats?

Hip hop culture is known for its passion for music, fashion, and artistry. But beneath the surface, there is a hidden environmental footprint.

Let's start with fashion. From designer brands to iconic streetwear, the fashion choices of Hip Hop artists contribute to the consumption of natural resources, water pollution, and waste production. But the industry is slowly waking up to the need for sustainable practices.

Music production is another aspect to consider. The creation of beats and albums requires energy-intensive studio equipment and manufacturing processes. By adopting renewable energy sources and reducing waste, Hip Hop artists can make a significant impact on their personal carbon footprint., but what about the system of the industry?

And what about transportation? Concert tours, video shoots, countless events, and the vehicles they promote and purchase contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

  • S4E176 - Her Unwritten Chapters: Honoring Native Child Kelly Mays
    Feb 5 2024
The Piper Carter Podcast Episode # 176 - Her Unwritten Chapters: Honoring Native Child Kelly Mays As we navigate these painful waters together, let us remember the importance of empathy, love, & solidarity. We hope that this episode serves as a catalyst for understanding, healing, & positive change within our community. Disclaimer: We want to emphasize that this episode of "Piper Carter Podcast" contains sensitive content that may be triggering for some listeners. If you or someone you know is experiencing intimate partner violence, please seek help immediately. Our aim is to provide support, raise awareness, & promote healing, but we are not professionals in the field. Reach out to qualified organizations and professionals for assistance. Remember that the case is ongoing, and we respect the legal process. Our focus is on addressing the broader issues surrounding intimate partner violence and fostering a sense of community healing. On January 7th, 2024, a voice fell silent. Kelly Mays, a Detroit native known for her fiery spirit & unwavering dedication to mental health advocacy, domestic violence support, arts, & culture was tragically murdered. Her vibrant legacy, however, remains a resounding whisper against the shadows of stigma & suffering. Kelly, or "Native Child" wasn't just a champion; she was a warrior. She battled the invisible claws of mental illness with words woven into spells of strength & hope through her powerful poetry & mentorship. Recent reports have emerged, suggesting that Kelly, a fierce advocate for mental health & victims of domestic violence, was herself a victim of the very affliction she ardently fought against. The details surrounding her passing cast a chilling fog. Allegations point to her estranged husband Jimmy Brown, known by the Detroit Hip Hop community as Supa Emcee. As the legal wheels turn, whispers of truth begin to emerge, each detail adding another layer of grief to the tapestry of loss. Supa was not just a prominent figure in the Detroit & Highland Park Hip Hop scenes, publicly he was a force for good within the community. His positive contributions and impact are undeniable. However, Supa's life took a turn when he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car crash in October 2020. This tragedy challenges our perceptions & forces us to grapple with the duality of human nature.
