Processing the Past

  • Resumen

  • Welcome to processing the past, where we will be talking about history but not the typical classroom kind, you'll be expecting me to talk about, pop culture, music, art and fashion but I'll be going all the way back in time 100 years ago to talk about the 1920s then the 30s and so on. We'll be following the next decades leading us up until now the 21st century. It will be made more visible how all the fads and now obsolete materials and items have come back into play as the years go on and it will be intriguing to notice how music, fashion and art have all been impacted now and how we are influenced by it because of the past and how recurring styles and fads come back again. Trends they come and they go, but are always going to be part of our history.

    Segment 1: music

More familiar artists, for the people my age who are still involved in music and in the industry today

    Artists like Bruno Mars

    Black eyed peas

as well as popular artists like Rihanna, who is performing in the upcoming super bowl,

Tame Impala, most people around my age have heard of them and know that the artist Kevin Parker is known for making ethereal songs that feel unreal as the genre is sort of indie/rock

Another popular artist that I'm a fan of, hes gained a lot of popularity in the last years, Mac DeMarco, known for writing beautiful songs about falling in and out of love and talking about women so beautifully in his music,

Him and Kevin Parker are both unique people with creative lifestyles

-As well as another popular band who formed mid 2000s

    - didn't receive so much popularity until 2010, Beach house, another relaxing indie band, their beautiful music represents love, hurt and more

-their Album Depression Cherry, is graceful and their song “Space Song” is extremely incredible and sad and almost fragile all in one,

-I highly recommend them for a relaxing evening,

    Segment 2: fashion https://wwd.com/fashion-nfews/fashion-scoops/2010s-fashion-trends-that-defined-decade-1203393941/

Most of this stuff will sound fairly familiar as many people still wear clothes and brands from these

    - Brands such as supreme and gucci went crazy with their logos,

-somehow it worked leading tons of people to show off this sort of style everywhere

-Athleisure or active wear was very popular, almost a way of showing off your lifestyle and how “healthy” you are

    - even for those who didn't work out, they just wanted to be a part of this athletic mania

-People would even elevate their outfits, like track pants with suits or blazers, becoming a casual look to see on the streets.

    - One thing many people have left behind in the early 2010s, the infamous skinny jeans

many people can pull it off,

it's sort of because a norm now where baggier or mom jeans are seen more than skinny jeans

    Segment 3: Art https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-art-movements-2010s

-Again Street art is still incredibly popular and is still going strong

-But if there a main piece i'd like...

    Segment 1: music https://www.musicgrotto.com/2000s-musicians/

-2000s Britney Spears and Avril Lavigne

-both being quite different in their music in style but still gaining millions of fans over songs like “toxic” and “girlfriend”

    - Avril was significantly younger than Britney,

-she did really call out to teenagers and many people became huge fans, she was 17 when she debut her first song “complicated”

-Avril still sings sometimes today and is in great shape

-other genres like rap were still thriving and artist like eminem came into the spotlight and stole the show, now 50 he still has a great voice and did perform at last years superbowl

    Segment 2: fashion https://www.thecoolist.com/y2k-fashion/

-Recently for the past year or so “y2k” fashion has been extremely trendy and popular, but nobody does it better than actually in the year 2000

-It was filled with glam and shiny belts, low rise jeans, and many of these may sound familiar to you because they're still in many stores trying to relive y2k

-Britney Spears had a massive influence on these clothing trends and y2k fashion

-Movies like Mean girls, which was in 2004 also impacted fashion a lot considering the main characters always dressed up in high heels, short skirts and yoga pants

-this era was a time of trial and error, not all y2k trends coming back, and some should be left as history, such as jeans under dresses

    Segment 3: Art https://www.artnews.com/list/art-in-america/features/the-exhibitions-that-defined-the-2000s-1234578321/

-As art progresses, more genres and more ways of expressing seem possible, every decade as we go seems to not only be paper artwork anymore

-architecture and rooms are also art

-I mainly want to talk about exhibitions, more than pieces themselves,

-Psychedelia / Psychedelic art and exhibitions, transforming you and bringing you into another universe or state of mind

  • The 1990s

    Segment 1: music
    • Nirvana (debuted in 80s but didn’t really become iconic until the 90s)
    • Rest in peace to a music icon Kurt Cobain,
    • made a label in music history having more than 1B streams on their most known song “smells like teenage spirit”
    • The meaning behind the song is actually pretty interesting, Kurt has been mentioned as “smelling like teen spirit”
    •  was unaware that it was actually a brand of deodorant and continued to make it the name of the song not realizing which is pretty funny to me
    • Same with radiohead
    • their song Creep from the Pablo honey album has 1B plays on Spotify,
    • definitely a milestone for music,
    • lead singer, Thom Yorke isnt much of a fan of this song and doesn’t like singing it anymore, like that it doesn’t represent how he feels anymore since he’s gotten older

    Segment 2: fashion

-90s fashion is my favorite out of all of the decades, besides the 80s,

And this one show really seemed to define and have an influence on clothing in the 90s

-Will Smith did inspire tons of people watching the show to dress like him

    • Bomber Jackets, scrunchies, which I know youve all heard,
    • And tons of plaid, lots of companies and brands have been trying to bring back "90s vintage" and are becoming more common once again, even if they werent the same as before.
    • Especially the iconic flipped Jacket Will brings into the light, even making a clothing line called "Bel-Air Athletics" which is super creative and awesome
    • This streetstyle will always have a special place in my heart

    Segment 3: Art https://study.com/learn/lesson/1990s-art-drawings-art-style-artists.html

-It's still popular now and has definitely evolved, It's one of those things that honestly will never go away

Art and music are both connected, being that hip-hop music created this graffiti movement

-Another Graffiti artist Banksy, an incredible street artist, still alive now and continuing many breathtaking works, and has even had art exhibits

-He used to hide his identity and was afraid of being arrested or persecuted as Keith Haring and many other street artists had been. He is a true gift to the art world
