    This episode is inspired by my own breaches in integrity over the 2 decades plus that I’ve been a coach and some I see other coaches stumble with as well.

    If you took coach training, hopefully you were provided with some standard ethical guidelines that need to be followed with your clients. Things like:

    · Keeping your coaching client’s contact info and what they say confidential unless they give express permission for you to share some part of it.

    · Setting personal and time boundaries with clients.

    Beyond that, no one talks much about ethics and integrity in coaching.

    Coaching is not currently a regulated field so it’s doubly important that you, as the professional coach, regulate yourself. That helps all coaches and the future of coaching.

    Complaints about coaches hurt the field of coaching. And we really don’t want this field to be regulated, as it would greatly change the coaching industry for the worse.

    Have you realized that YOU are a PROFESSIONAL? Take this in.

    Own the fact that what you do is a professional service and you are a trained professional offering serious and consequential experiences through your coaching.

    When I say serious and consequential, I mean that you could hurt someone just as easily as you could help them.

    A new VIP client of mine read an article about SEO—search engine optimization—and went down a rabbit hole of stress.

    I assured them that we addressed SEO for a coach by doing market research on their chosen target audience and applying smart keywords to everything we wrote for her coaching business.

    And, for the business model we created, with high-touch, high-ticket offers, they would not need to dig deeper into SEO. The relief was palpable.

    Search traffic is NOT the best way to attract serious coaching clients who will show up, do the work and make real progress.

    And, besides that, AI is stealing attention away from original content on searches at an increasing rate.

    Let your left brain relax. You don’t have to play in that cold SEO sandbox.

    Will MORE training make you successful as a coach?

    Additional course work can be stimulating and potentially useful.

    It can also be addictive—a form of self sabotage.

    There’s even a term for it. Bright shiny object syndrome.

    Sometimes it’s an unconscious and conflicting goal to prolong student coach mode.

    Coaches in their early years are vulnerable to this. But it’s a costly mindset and habit.

    RESOURCE: Hire a private business mentor exclusively for new coaches to get grounded and launch strategically.

    There are so many upsides to having your own business – lifestyle freedom, no caps on your income, the chance to be your own boss, put your unique voice and contribution into the world. And, no more company politics!

    But the biggest downside to operating as a solopreneur is that you are solo unless you do something intentional to change that.

    Isolation can be a contracting force. The longer you go without support, the faster your momentum disappears. You might begin to question your decision to become a coach and might even quit.

    You don’t have a team, a sounding board or even a water cooler connection. And, your clients should not be your only professional connection.

    So, what can you do? I have 4 ideas for you and urge you to put at least one of these into place now to create community in the way that fits you best. Whatever you do, don’t put off finding solutions because isolation can lead to depression.
