    In this episode of Run with Fitpage, we discuss whagt really a champion's mindset is. We have the pleasure of hosting Joanna Zeiger, an accomplished athlete and now researcher to discuss all about mental toughness with our host, Vikas Singh.

    Joanna Sue Zeiger, born on May 4, 1970, is an esteemed American triathlete and a prominent figure in the world of sports and research. As the 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Champion and a representative of the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics, Joanna's athletic achievements are remarkable. She began her athletic journey as a swimmer, competing alongside her sister Laurie at the 1989 Maccabiah Games, where she won multiple medals. Transitioning to triathlons, Joanna's dedication and mental toughness led her to numerous victories, including Ironman Brasil 2005 and Ironman Coeur d'Alene 2006. She is also the author of "The Champion Mindset: An Athlete's Guide to Mental Toughness," offering valuable insights into developing resilience and peak performance.     Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Joanna Zeiger is a highly respected researcher and epidemiologist. She earned her PhD from Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health and has conducted significant studies on drug use and mental toughness in athletes. As the founder and CEO of a research institute, Joanna has focused on the benefits of cannabis, particularly CBD, for pain management and improving quality of life. Her pioneering work in The Sisu Study and The Athlete PEACE Survey has shed light on the medicinal possibilities of CBD for athletes. Joanna's dual expertise in sports and research makes her a unique and inspiring figure, contributing valuable knowledge to both fields.

    In this episode of Run with Fitpage, we have a leading researcher in the field of integrative physiology and human locomotion — Dr Alena Grabowski. Dr Alena discusses all about Ground Reaction Force, and its impact on your running journey, with our host, Vikas Singh.


    Dr Alena Grabowski is a distinguished Associate Professor in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. With a career dedicated to the intersection of physiology and biomechanics, Dr. Grabowski's research explores how assistive mechanical devices, such as leg prostheses and exoskeletons, impact human locomotion, including walking, running, hopping, jumping, bicycling, and sprinting. A significant part of her work focuses on ground reaction forces (GRF) and their implications for running performance, providing valuable insights for athletes and researchers alike. Grabowski earned her B.A. in Kinesiology from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and later completed her Ph.D. in Integrative Physiology at the same institution. Her professional journey includes a post-doctoral fellowship at the Media Lab Biomechatronics Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and roles as a Research Scientist at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and a Research Specialist at Whirlwind Wheelchair International.


    Dr Grabowski leads the Applied Biomechanics Laboratory, where her innovative research continues to advance our understanding of the biomechanical and physiological effects of assistive devices, ultimately aiming to improve mobility and performance for individuals with and without physical impairments. Her work not only contributes to academic knowledge but also has practical applications in enhancing athletic performance and developing targeted rehabilitation programs.

  • Ep 180: Running, Exercise in General, and Their Role in Cancer Recovery with Dr Kathryn Schmitz

    In this episode of Run with Fitpage, we have the pleasure of bringing you a conversation about exercise and its role in cancer treatment - with none other than, Dr Kathryn Schmitz, who is a leading researcher in the field of exercise oncology. Dr Kathryn discusses all about exercise and its impact in cancer treatment with our host, Vikas Singh.

    Dr Kathryn Schmitz is a distinguished professor of public health sciences at Pennsylvania State University’s College of Medicine. With a career dedicated to understanding and promoting the benefits of exercise in cancer prevention and recovery, she chaired the 2019 International Multidisciplinary American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Roundtable on Exercise and Cancer Prevention and Control. Under her leadership, experts from various fields reached a consensus on the pivotal role of exercise oncology, marking a significant step towards integrating exercise into standard cancer care. Dr Schmitz’s extensive research has led to the publication of over 230 peer-reviewed scientific papers and has garnered $25 million in research funding since 2001. Her work includes leading multiple clinical trials and successfully translating research findings into clinical practice. Notably, she developed an online educational training program for exercise professionals and physical therapists, which has trained more than 700 outpatient rehabilitation specialists across the United States.

    As the lead author of the first ACSM Roundtable on Exercise for Cancer Survivors in 2010, Dr Schmitz helped establish crucial guidelines for exercise testing and prescription for cancer survivors. This guidance was further updated in an international consensus statement published in 2019. Dr Schmitz served as the president of ACSM from 2018 to 2019 and is currently the immediate past president of the organization. Her initiative, "Moving Through Cancer," aims to ensure that exercise and rehabilitation become a standard of care for all individuals living with and beyond cancer. The initiative focuses on workforce development, programming, research, and policy advocacy to achieve its mission.
