//BLUF: IRANIAN WARSHIP SINKS IN PORT DUE TO MALFUNCTION. HURRICANE BERYL LEAVES MILLIONS WITHOUT POWER IN TEXAS. SCOTUS JUSTICE SECURITY DETAIL INVOLVED IN ATTEMPTED CARJACKING IN WASHINGTON D.C.//

    -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----

    -International Events-

Iran: The IRIN Mowj-class Frigate SAHAND capsized in port Bandar Abbas on Saturday while undergoing modernization operations and general repairs and upgrades. This follows Iran’s recent election in which Masoud Pezeshkian was elected to the office of President.

    -HomeFront-

Washington D.C. – The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has released information regarding a US Marshals Service (USMS) shooting that involved a SCOTUS Justice. In an MPD press release dated July 5th, an individual attempted to carjack an official USMS vehicle that was providing security at the residence of SCOTUS Justice Sotomayor. Two Marshals engaged the assailant after he produced a firearm and attempted to carjack the security detail. The assailant has been identified as 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers, and was hospitalized for non-life threatening wounds as a result of the shooting. AC: The initial reporting of this incident made no mention of the connection to a SCOTUS Justice, however the address provided by the MPD matches that of Justice Sotomayor. Additionally, the assailant arrived at the location in a vehicle of his own, however no mention was made of the status of this getaway vehicle and/or who or if anyone was driving it.

Texas: Damage continues following the arrival of Hurricane Beryl. As of this report, roughly two million customers remain without power. Localized flooding has also complicated efforts to ensure logistical needs are met, with food and fuel shortages affecting many areas.

    -----END TEARLINE-----

Analyst Comments: Iranian officials have released few details regarding the sinking of their warship, but have given the cause of the sinking as accidental due to issues with the ship’s ballast system. The SAHAND was quickly salvaged Saturday night as she originally sank pier side. However, during the recovery operation (or shortly afterward) she capsized and sank again on Sunday in slightly deeper waters within the port of Bandar Abbas. Iranian officials have not acknowledged the second sinking yet. However, as the SAHAND is now almost completely underwater salvage operations may take some time.

Of note, Iranian ship classes are frequently debated as the domestically-produced Iranian vessels usually do not conform to international standards. Iran classifies their newest line of Mowj-class vessels as Destroyers, whereas most of the world classifies them as Frigates due to their largely defensive role and questionable Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capabilities.

//BLUF: FRANCE ELECTION RESULTS IN GAINS FOR FAR-LEFT PARTIES. BOEING PLEADS GUILTY REGARDING 2018-2019 CRASH INVESTIGATIONS.//

    -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----

    -International Events-

France: Riots continue despite the latest election results. Yesterday’s snap election yielded big gains for extreme-Far-Left political parties as the New Popular Front (NFP) received the largest number of seats. In second place was Macron’s coalition, with Le Pen’s National Rally receiving the third highest number of seats.

    -HomeFront-

Texas: Hurricane Beryl makes landfall in Texas as a Category 1 hurricane. Local reports indicate roughly 1.5 million people were without power in the Galveston area, however the power to many customers has been already restored.

USA: Boeing has accepted a plea deal to plead guilty to criminal charges stemming from a federal investigation into two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019. These fatal crashes killed all passengers onboard, totaling 338 victims between the two incidents. Both incidents were investigated on the allegations of faulty materials being used in the construction of the aircraft, among many other safety issues.

    -----END TEARLINE-----

Analyst Comments: Due to legal precedence, Boeing (the company) will be convicted of felonies, but no current or former Boeing employee will be charged with any crime with regards to these crashes. Boeing will be fined $243.6 million. For perspective, Boeing reported a little over $77 billion in profits for 2023, generating roughly $209 million per day in revenue.

//BLUF: LABOUR PARTY WINS BIG IN U.K. ELECTIONS. U.S. FORCES CONTINUE TARGETING HOUTHIS IN YEMEN. WISCONSIN REINSTATES BALLOT DROP BOXES.//

    -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----

    -International Events-

United Kingdom: The Labour Party swept yesterdays election in a landslide, ousting Tory leadership from power. Last night, Kier Starmer accepted the role of Prime Minister.

Red Sea/HOA: Yesterday US forces allegedly destroyed two more Houthi Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs), in addition to an alleged Houthi radar site in Yemen.

    -HomeFront-

New York: A suspected drunk driver drove his vehicle into a crowd of people in a park in Lower East Side Manhattan last night. 3x people were killed in the collision, and as of this morning at least 7x are still hospitalized due to the severity of their injuries.

Wisconsin: The State Supreme Court has issued a ruling to reinstate most ballot drop boxes, following its own earlier decision to ban their use. The earlier judgement was based on their interpretation of a state statute which made the use of drop boxes outside of official election centers illegal, as well as the state laws prohibiting the executive branch from tampering with election procedures.

    -----END TEARLINE-----

Analyst Comments: As a reminder, the use (and number of) ballot drop boxes in Wisconsin increased substantially during the COVID era, with over 40% of all votes cast during the 2020 election originating from drop boxes that were deemed illegal by the Supreme Court. The situation with regards to Wisconsin’s highest legal office has also become particularly nasty following many scandals and much infighting over the past year. The Wisconsin Supreme Court changed to a liberal majority last year, resulting in many corruption scandals, changes to procedure, and more open partisanship (via justices receiving exceptionally large campaign donations from political parties). This also resulted in the reversal of their own ruling, which will keep ballot drop boxes in place for the 2024 election season.

//BLUF: EXPLOSION AT GENERAL DYNAMICS EXPLOSIVES FACTORY IN ARKANSAS. BOIL WATER ADVISORY ISSUED FOR WASHINGTON D.C.//

    -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----

    -International Events-

Middle East: Hezbollah rocket attacks have increased over the past few days, alongside Israeli targeting in southern Lebanon and the Golan Heights.

Europe: A stabbing incident was reported in the vicinity of Versailles Palace this morning. No further details have been provided yet as this is a developing situation.

    -HomeFront-

Washington D.C. – A boil water advisory has been emplaced for the entirety of the district due to potential water contamination. This advisory has been issued as a result of increased turbidity due to low water levels, which hinders chemical treatment efforts.

Arkansas: A large explosion at the General Dynamics facility in Camden yesterday has resulted in the injury of 2x workers, with one employee still missing.

    -----END TEARLINE-----

Analyst Comments: The cause of the blast has not been disclosed, however General Dynamics did indicate that the blast involved “pyrotechnics”. This extremely large facility provides warheads for Hellfire missiles, and provides the explosives for (and assembly of) Hydra/APKWS rockets.

//BLUF: BORDER CLASHES EMERGE BETWEEN TURKEY AND SYRIA. ITALY INTERCEPTS SHIPS CARRYING CONCEALED CHINESE DRONES.//

    -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----

    -International Events-

Middle East: Turkey has reportedly closed border crossings with Syria following an outbreak of violence over the past few days.

Mediterranean: Italian customs authorities have reported the seizure of Chinese drones in the process of being transferred from two Chinese cargo ships, to other vessels bound for Libya. The UAS platforms were the larger Wing Loong II variant, and were discovered concealed inside six shipping containers upon entry to the Italian port of Gioia Tauro where they were camouflaged among wind turbine equipment. The drones have been confiscated due to the UN embargo restricting the shipment of military arms to Libya.

    -----END TEARLINE-----

Analyst Comments: Tensions have been slowly escalating between Turkey and Syria following an influx of Syrian refugees in Turkey, which has become increasingly more of a problem for Turkey over the past few years. Turkish citizens have adopted a more anti-migrant stance following the arrest of a Syrian man for the abuse of a child a few days ago. After the atrocious act was made public, ethnic Turks rioted in condemnation of ethnic Syrians, to include property damage within Syrian communities in Turkey. Consequently, Syrians counterprotested, which included limited small arms engagements between Syrians and Turkish border guards. So far, local media reports 4x fatalities, with 20x others wounded as a result of the latest border skirmishes.

//BLUF: DPRK TESTS NEW MISSILE. HURRICANE BERYL REACHES CAT 5. ACID ATTACK STRIKES GERMANY. VIOLENT RHETORIC INCREASES IN US BEFORE ELECTION.//

    -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----

    -International Events-

Far East: North Korea has tested their newest ballistic missile, the Hwasongpho-11 Da-4.5. Two missiles were launched during the test, one of which appears to have suffered a failure at one of its early stages, according to South Korea. AC: Though the success of this test is uncertain, this is the first time the DPRK has tested this new platform, which North Korea claims is capable of carrying a “super large” 4.5 ton warhead.

Caribbean: Hurricane Beryl has strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane. So far, widespread damage has been reported in Grenada as the hurricane briefly made initial landfall. Further projections and forecast modeling at the moment predicts Hurricane Beryl will make final landfall on the eastern coast of Mexico, to possibly include parts of Texas.

Germany: An unidentified male conducted an acid attack in a café in Bochum on Sunday. So far, police have indicated that this may have been a targeted attack on one person at the café. However, as many as 14 people were either directly burned in the attack, or were otherwise involved or wounded. AC: Almost all details of the attack have been concealed by authorities at this time (which is typical of terror attacks throughout Europe), however the assailant was arrested shortly after the attack.

    -HomeFront-

USA: Following the wake of various SCOTUS rulings, to include ruling in favor of President Trump with regards to his immunity from prosecution for official acts as President, violent rhetoric has become common on social media, mostly among various far-left activists (and many celebrities, journalists, pundits, etc).

    -----END TEARLINE-----

Analyst Comments: Ordinarily, the violent rhetoric originating from mostly leftist groups would be not worthy of mention as the political far-left has been allowed to say such things on social media without repercussion for some time now. This textbook threatening language has evolved to the point of Leftist groups threatening a President, which normally is the most-forbidden topic that results in immediate investigation under normal circumstances. However, legalities aside, this does shift the baseline of acceptable social behavior to the point that pundits on mainstream media are either outright encouraging such violent rhetoric, or passively agreeing with it. Even though a tidal wave of violent rhetoric has become common in the digital sphere in the lead up to Presidential elections, shifting the goalposts to normalize increasingly violent rhetoric should be noted as it is a strong indicator of violent speech eventually becoming violent behavior. Right now, violent speech (despite the legalities) can generally be attributed to meaningless internet outrage. However it would be wise to remain aware of some of the more specific and widespread rhetoric, or threats that are made by groups well known to resort to violence; taking random threats on the internet seriously would be prudent just in case malign actors decide to make good on their threats.

//BLUF: U.S. ELEVATES TERROR THREAT RISK AT SEVERAL BASES THROUGHOUT EUROPE. PARIS RIOTS FOLLOWING FIRST ROUND OF VOTING.//

    -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----

    -International Events-

Europe: The threat posture for U.S. Forces in Europe has been increased. Over the past few days, several U.S. military bases in Europe have reportedly increased to FPCON CHARLIE, tightening security with regards to off-base travel, entry-exit procedures, etc.

France: Riots have broken out in Paris following the first round of voting. Far-Left demonstrators rallied in opposition to Le Pen’s National Rally Party winning 33% of the vote, signaling a huge shift in French politics towards supporting allegedly “far-right” candidates.

    -HomeFront-

Washington D.C. – The SCOTUS has ruled that President Trump does have immunity for actions that were withing his purview as President.

    -----END TEARLINE-----

Analyst Comments: The reason for this widespread FPCON elevation has not been publicly disclosed, nor have defense officials indicated that the increased posture is due to a specific threat. However, with increased tensions in the Middle East, combined with the looming American holiday (which always presents increased risks of lone wolf attacks for service members who take leave during holidays), the general risks of attacks on U.S. bases overseas remains higher than the baseline. Conversely, FPCON CHARLIE is not a protection level that can easily be maintained for long periods of time; after a few days, the logistical challenges of operating at such a heightened state of security is counterproductive to the daily operation of any military base. As such, this heightened awareness is likely in response to a specific threat that has not been disclosed yet. Though tensions in the Middle East are expected to rise significantly in the event of conflict potentially expanding, it’s not clear as to if this increased security posture is related to any imminently developing events in the region.
